I agree this can only be bad news for the village pubs/bars in Bulgaria I see so many here in the uk that are empty or they have turned into restaurants selling what I call C**P food but it is the way that the EU wants things nothing left for the small Guy a bit like that Shark

I think a lot of people care, sadly they can't do anything about it.

The minority that can do something about it always seem more interested in lining their own pockets at the expense of the majority.

well yes but problem here is mr/s small guy cannot pay the bills to take big brewerys 2 court.2 argue thier reasons why it should not b law.so who wins all round THE MINISTERS cause what they say goes .till small pubs r closed then no tax incomin from them,then its ohhhhh need more money 2 make up 4 lost tax so who we gonna put money onto now,,,,,,,,,,again ring a bell.soon bulgaria will not b the place to go to invest ur money,itll b get ur money out so wheres next..... by what im hearing through our investers......latvia,,,,,because thier currencies collapsed,,,so any of u lot got few pennies,levs left in the pot look there.then either thank me or kill me in 3 years time heehee.

Its very sad this as so many small villages will lose their life style let alone the income but unfortunately you can see this everywhere I remember when all the shopping was done locally then the big boys moved in and that was that and the same will happen here only the big boys will be able to negotiate a lower price with the supplier and then everyone will be shopping for booze at the giants and drinking at home its so sad but it wont stop at that

Bulgaria Hard Liquor, Beer Tax Remains Unchanged

The Members of the Bulgarian Parliament voted Thursday to keep the current levels of hard liquor and beer tax all through 2010.

The MPs voted on second reading despite the fact that last week the Parliamentary Budget Committee approved a higher alcohol excise.

On Wednesday Bulgaria’s Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, asked the MPs to reconsider their stand on alcohol duties saying he made a commitment the vine growers – an appeal with which the MPs complied Thursday.

The only exception was made by the conservative “Order, Law and Justice” party (RZS) which stated they supported the move to not raise the hard liquor tax, but continue to insist on increasing the beer excise.

The leader of RZS, Yane Yanev, said Borisov had not asked to keep the beer excise the same. On Wednesday, Yanev made statements that in the middle of 2010 his party will propose again an alcohol excise hike and Borisov’s ruling Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) party would then support them as part of the agreement they made.

The RZS MP, Darin Matov, presented the increase of the beer tax as a form a protection of the Bulgarian vine growers and wine makers, saying 95% of the breweries in Bulgaria are owned by foreign companies. He also noted the higher beer tax will prevent beer consumption on the part of minors.

The ethnic Turkish Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) says the problem is not in the tax amount but the lack of State and Customs control on alcohol sales.

Earlier Thursday, the MPs voted to increase gambling tax by 15% to compensate for maintaining the alcohol tax levels.

Yes, but how many have they put out of business? At least the small local store owner tended to spend his money locally, Tescos just disappears to the Tesco shareholders.
And Tesco dictates the cost of just about everything.
(For Tesco read Asda, Morrisons, Aldi, Netto, Lidl, Sainsburys, etc. etc.)

Now see all the dead villages in UK, dormitories for rich city workers, no facilities left.

Are these lessons never going to be learned?

Just a subject I feel strongly about, it's probably reflected all over the UK, but Cumbria's fairly rural, and I've seen the "
death"
of so many villages and communities.
Everywhere used to have a Post Office, a Police house, a primary school. a pub or two, a small shop, a butcher, and a sense of belonging.
Now we see them deserted, like I said, dormitories for rich people, public transport you catch on your calendar not your watch and some villages none at all. No pub, or sometimes one survives as a restaurant, no Post Office, no shop, no school, nothing. It's the senior citizens who are mostly affected, no car, not many locals left, very little community spirit.

Reading about all the change in BG, it looks like it's all gonna happen there as well.

Yes I know there has to be "
progress"
but it would be nice to see progess in a way thet didn't swamp all the traditions and way of life.

Bulgarian Beer Consumption Slumps by 12% in 2009

The Bulgarian beer market in 2009 has collapsed by 12% in comparison with consumption in 2008.

"
If we consider only the last three months, the fall in different regions varies between 20% and 40%,"
Alexander Grancharov, CEO of Carlsberg Bulgaria and board member of the Union of Brewers, announced at a press conference in Shumen on Thursday.

"
To the reasons for this decline - loss of population, unemployment, a bad tourist season - we may add the influenza epidemic, because of which people have started to get together less,"
Grancharov said.

According to him, the negative trend will be maintained into next year, when a further decrease of 3% to 5% in beer consumption is expected.

"
Market volume has returned to what it was five years ago, and at least three to four more years will be needed to restore the levels seen in 2008,"
said Alexander Grancharov.


Looks like the slippery slope has begun here or could there be some other reason for the drop ?

Most people will stick to their home made Rakia and wine I feel....thats what my wifes family are doing!

You could be right mugshot is it the time of year for Rakia I know it is for wine but not to sure about Rakia
