Still a fair bit of snow up here, Not wishing to rain on your parade... BUT with the thaw comes the floods and the mud, so a different set of problems to prepare for

Yes I know Bill and it is worrying me sick as I KNOW for sure the snow all piled up at the top will run down the hill track to our place and will flood the garden again. We have dug about a spade deep of earth for two trenches across the dirt track last year, so I am hoping that will stop most of it, maybe we should have gone deeper. Then of course our track road was not cleared of snow so as you say another set of problems to content with. Begs the question ' Do I really want to continue living in BG'

Not a time to worry, a time to prepare try and anticipate the problem and prevent it best you can.
I was in Rocky Mountains during one Christmas and they have procedures in winter and I have carried out a few of them, not all applicable as they have a much worse time than we have.
if you google - preparing for the thaw - you will find a lot of info that may help??

As for living in BG???? well this was a pretty bad winter, worst one we have had in 10 years here, put that against all the good seasons and relaxed life style we have, a couple of months of 'problem solving' isn't that bad.
Keeps your mind active and a bit of exercise

I have to say the older I get and with the winters getting worse I do question if living here is for me, I have been out here full time for 4 years and I am now seriously considering moving back to the uk, we are quite lucky that we didn't sell our house and only rented it out so at least we will have somewhere to go back to if we decide that's the way ahead which I personally think it will be, it wouldn't be so bad if the services here were up to scratch ie they moved the piles of snow in order to avoid the flooding but no this doesn't happen here in Bg they just don't care and its always left to the house owners to try and get help locally with issues like this which always ends up costing us which I don't mind but really should anyone have to live like this in the winter?

I like to think that we have experienced the best of both worlds, living in the UK (mind you weather not good at present, freezing fog) and having 4/5 holidays at our villa every year, we are very proud of our Bulgarian home and all the loyal friends we have there. In April we will have owned our villa for 10 years ( apart from the year we had trouble, but fought the legal system and won) but we will have to make a decision on what we will do with it in the future as my wife has got an incurable health problem. It will break my heart the day we have to say good-bye to it and Bulgaria, or perhaps our children might like to take it over

Sorry to hear about your wife Brian but at the end of the day you will have to do what is best for both of you. On another note I will also add I have been here for a number of years and always live in hope that the services would get better and that there would be more help in the winter for the villages but that hasn't happened yet and I don't think in my lifetime it will? yes I agree Bg still has a lot to offer in the few summer months and the life style is great but the winter seems to always over shadow the good bits, I have considered moving out of Bg but not sure where I would go? but one thing is for sure I shall at some point be moving as I can not put up with the way this countries government do not care about the people in the villages and only ever come to some half hearted attempt to help when its to late.

Its a sad fact that Bulgaria is slipping away from a lot of peeps and all because the government won't get off their ass and do something about it.

 Guys for you comments. We have all experienced life here and it seem we all love it apart from the services, what a afwul shame!  There are several family movinig back to UK but several moving to BG so we have no matter what anyone says we have to experience things for ourselves and then decide what is best..  Sorry to hear you will be on the move Polly but glad you have your house.  We too rented out for the first time last year I would not consider selling my house in the UK as if it does not work out, we have still got our home.  

Bryan I do hope your decision will take a few more years or so to make and then the children will take over.

Went to Silistra today and the roads were fab. Only small problem was getting out of our road but thankfully we have the 4WD

Wow! are we lucky or what!!! It is an amazing bright and sunny day here in Silistra, looking out the window is it like the height of summer - went outside the enclosed balcony and ooooooooooooooh still very chilly, but hey lets not let that put us off eh!!! Off to clear away some of the snow to make paths for the water to flow away when the big thaw starts.....

the problem with life is unless you are really lucky, you come out off school and straight into work as was my case at 15 because my Dad died and mum could not afford me to stay on, but again that's life.
the problem is we all go from work into debt and marriage and then kids and in some cases kids before marriage then as the kids are older the time is ours, except health issues kick us where it hurts and instead of saying we have all the time in the world so lets live it, we are starting to say but we might only have 10 or 20 years to live and we start to vegetate. we all know this the emails came in 20 years ago for Russian brides then 10 years ago it was for Viagra and now the emails are saying leave something to cover your funeral expense's but how did they find out how old we are?
the fact is we know have the time our bodies will tell us when not to bother with the internet and just book that flight back to the UK, so until that day live the life and enjoy what you got, but tell the kids where your house is so they can put it on ebay when your gone.

Cheer up Paddy...it's not all doom and gloom.
