What is the world coming to. It is dominated by news from all over Europe that all our countries (not just the UK) are over run by people seeking a safer and better life, and the following link is a bitter reminder of what people will do to try and achieve that [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

It doesn't matter how many get arrested there will always be others who come along to fill their boots Brian, however I am more concerned about whats happening with the refugees and the picture of the child's body that is now all over the world, we can not any longer sit back and say 'Its not our problem let them die' they are human beings and some not even had chance to live!!!!

I hope this marks the change to help these people. Something finally needs to be done, we complain about these people, but if we were torn apart by war and everyone spent every day fearing for there lives wouldn't you want some help? Wouldn't you want to escape? Not be turned away and told how much of a burden you are? I'm Ashamed to be British at the moment ....due to the lack of compassion shown towards those little children and their mother who have died. Nobody deserves to die in that way.If the picture had been of a dead homeless British person, would we have had the same outcry? YES!

I take it that the latest comment are about the Syrian migrants and the death of the mother and her 2 children....Well I am furious, if it was oil, minerals or any form of financial gain the super powers would be wading in armed to the teeth , yet they just all stand by and say its not our problem... the world needs to wake up get involved and share the burden of the poor desperate people seeking a better life ( it only normal to want better and both you and I would do exactly the same) desperate times call for desperate measures. Only people gaining out of this misery are the traffickers and they need to be brought to account ! I hope people have seen enough to want to do something for the real refugees. The people that deserve it. Rest in peace... you never asked for this.

We all know Berni that you would help if you could that goes without saying, and yes Bg is doing a bit but I think all countries could do more especially those like the US and the UK who both have a lot to answer for regarding Syria.

We can all do a bit by signing this petition

No more drownings. Immediate sanctuary for those fleeing from war

NO MORE DROWNINGS. We the undersigned demand, after the terrible tragedy of more than 80 Syrian and Palestinian refugees, many of them young children, drowning in the Mediterranean that the government gives immediate sanctuary to refugees fleeing from war and violence. We are not asking that they be given permanent residence but that as a humanitarian act they are given a place of sanctuary while their futures are decided.

Here's a bit of news.... from Novinite

Bulgarian Authorities Detain Two Border Policemen on Suspicions of Bribery

wo Bulgarian border policemen were detained on Monday on suspicions of having accepted bribes offered by a trafficker of migrants across the border with Serbia.

According to the prosecutor's office, during their duty on September 1 the two police officers accepted BGN 700 in bribes offered by a Bulgarian citizen transporting three illegal immigrants.

By accepting the bribe the policemen agreed not to conduct an inspection of the vehicle transporting the refugees, the refugees themselves and their belongings.

The two border policemen allowed the vehicle to pass untroubled and did not report it and its passengers to the border police department in Kalotina.

I thought these were poor refugees, but of what I have seen on news clips of people taking taxis, and what all the articles imply that they are using trains and public transport to move around where are the getting their money from, these are not the poor of the middle east at all they are the middle classes getting out whilst they still can, the real refugees are still in the middle east in camps and war zones those are the ones we should pity and want to help. I'm afraid that the numbers coming in now are so huge that traditional border crossing procedures are no longer able to cope. In countries like Hungary, Croatia and Serbia there are just not the resources to process them all. High fences, barbed wire, water cannon and teargas . . . . none of this is effective.

Bulgarian traffickers making a killing in EU migrant crisis

Sofia (AFP) - The truck with 71 dead migrants abandoned in August on an Austrian motorway had Hungarian plates and a Slovakian poultry firm's livery. But five of the six suspects since arrested are Bulgarians.

To detectives probing the dark business of human trafficking, this was no surprise.

Organised criminals in Bulgaria are major players in the lucrative trade in human cargo -- and often have scant regard for whether their freight lives or dies.

Bulgaria, a member of the European Union, is the bridge between Turkey and the rest of the EU.

Its gangs came to the 2015 migration crisis with a wealth of smuggling experience, transporting everything from heroin to fake Gucci bags.

The latest Trafficking in Persons report by the US State Department calls Bulgaria "one of the primary source countries" -- and also a transit country -- of men, women and children sold into sex slavery and forced labour.

With corrupt officials turning a blind eye, women and children are shipped worldwide, disabled people are forced into begging on Europe's streets and labourers find themselves stuck as far away as Zambia, the report said.
The flow of people fleeing war, persecution and poverty in Syria, Afghanistan and the Horn of Africa has offered even bigger pickings.

Armed with their EU passports, know-how, equipment and contacts, the Bulgarian gangs have become the go-to organisations for the desperate.

"It has been easy to transform the paths forged by traffickers into channels for smuggling migrants, who are vulnerable and ready to take risks," Kamelia Dimitrova, head of a Bulgarian government commission tackling human trafficking, told AFP.

- Big in trucking -

Bulgarians are also second only to Turks when it comes to numbers of lorry drivers in Europe, said Tihomir Bezlov, an expert in crime at the Centre for the Study of Democracy (CSD) in Sofia.

"And as EU citizens, they have an advantage over the Turks because they can move within Europe without a visa," Bezlov told AFP.
More than 340,000 migrants have arrived in the Balkans this year.

"The migratory pressure towards Europe means that most of the criminal gangs are getting in on the act because profits are quick," said Rumiana Bachvarova, Bulgaria's interior minister.

Most of the new arrivals enter Greece and seek to travel through the western Balkans towards northern Europe, helped in many cases by Bulgarian gangs operating well beyond their own borders.

An investigation by Bulgaria's Nova television station found that migrants travelling from Istanbul have to pay several traffickers along the route a total of 9,000 euros ($10,075) per person.

Crossing a border costs 800-900 euros. Bulgarian border police look the other way if their palms are greased with 250-300 euros per person, Nova said.

The risks, until recently, have been low.

So far this year, only 283 people have been convicted in Bulgaria for smuggling, generally getting away with suspended sentences of a few months and fines of just 1,000 leva (510 euros, $570).

Parliament however recently tightened the law, punishing people transporting migrants across the border with 10 years in prison and fines of 30,000 leva. Crooked officials, in theory, can expect up to 12 years behind bars.

It's not just gangs that are in on the act.

Bulgaria is the EU's poorest country, with a national average monthly salary of just 400 euros ($448), so the incentive for ordinary people to earn extra cash is high.

Many locals in the Vidin region near the Serbian border are making money by driving migrants over the frontier.

"Anything that moves is fine -- buses, boats, cars -- with a preference for buses since they earn more money," Vladislav Vlachev, a spokesman for public prosecutors in Vidin, told AFP.

"Everyone apart from the grandmothers is getting involved."

We shouldn't be surprised at this, I'm sure this has been going on a lot longer than the present issue with Syria everyone knows that the Bg police are probably the most corrupt in the world. Maybe its a government problem as far as the police are concerned? when you look at what they are paid to risk their lives its a pittance.

Excellent find Willow but as Cheeky says we shouldn't be surprised at all, this article is only confirms what we as ex pats have known for years and not just about refugees its about the whole system here and the corruption that goes on, anyone would think we live in a third world country.

A follow up on this terrible story

Bulgaria to Extradite Suspect in Migrant Truck Deaths to Austria

Crime | September 29, 2015, Novinite

A Bulgarian court has decided to extradite a Bulgarian national to Austria to face charges of people trafficking and causing the death of 71 illegal migrants.

The dead bodies of 71 migrants were found in the back of a refrigerator truck abandoned on a motorway in Austria near the border with Hungary in late August. According to the Austrian prosecutors Tsvetanov, 32, is part of a suspected people smuggling ring trafficking people to western Europe.

DNA samples taken from the cabin of the truck have linked four Bulgarians and an Afghan national to the case. The five men were arrested in Hungary.

Tsvetanov, 32, told the district court in Montana, in northwestern Bulgaria, that he was innocent. He faces life imprisonment, if convicted in Austria
