| First topic message reminder :This I think can only be good news for this region of Bulgaria, the Germans are very shrewed investers and they know a good thing when they see one so maybe things are changing now for the good Bulgarian real estate fund FairPlay Properties and Lidl Bulgaria signed a deal on the sale of a 22 000 sq m plot in the Bulgarian city of Plovdiv on September 30 2009.Lidl Bulgaria is the local arm of German hard discounter Lidl, part of Schwarzgruppe. The transaction had a price tag of 2.3 million euro before value-added tax. The plot would accommodate a Lidl supermarket and was part of the chain's local expansion efforts. The retailer has been actively growing its Bulgarian network with new outlets in Lovech, Pazadjik, Pleven and Silistra currently under construction. The Plovdiv plot is part of FairPlay's Retail Park Trakia developmen, which is planned in the city's residential area by the same name. Fairplay said the park would house a hypermarket of a renown European non-food chain, though the company refused to name the chain. Sources told Dnevnik that the property fund was in talks with several big retailers but pen had not put to paper yet. FairPlay would use the proceeds of the sale to reduce its credit exposure, executive director Manyu Moravenov said. After the Plovdiv deal, Fairplay has repaid 5.4 million euro in principals since the start of 2009. |

| Very good news for all of you in BG. It is nice to have a choice and also knowing you will all be paying the same price, meaning everything will be marked up. Tesco are here in Turkey but only in big Towns, they are called Kipa, the nearest one to us is about 1 hours drive away. They have a good selection of meat and veg but not pork. Haha ! They have some clothes and toys but not all the goodies that we really want. I will be going next month on a trip with other ladies to Izmir which, also has an Ikea store, and i will be able to pick up some goodies from them, as they seem to have a good selection near the exit. Chocolate, biscuits, and Dime bars and cakes ooh making my mouth water. So lets hope it keeps growing and the more work it creates, the better for everyone. |

| German retailer Lidl to open its first Bulgarian stores on November 25
German discount retailer Lidl will open its first outlets in Bulgaria on November 25 2010, the company said.
The shops will be in 11 cities, including Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna, Stara Zagora, Pazardzhik, Sliven, Kurdjali, Petrich, Montana, Lovech and Gabrovo.
Lidl, which recently opened a logistics hub near Elin Pelin, has been gearing up to enter the Bulgarian market for a couple of years.
At the start of 2010, Lidl reached an agreement to acquire the Bulgarian and Romanian business of German sector player Plus.
The deal, stipulating the purchase of 23 Bulgarian and 96 Romanian stores, has already been cleared by the antitrust regulators of the Bulgaria and Romania.
German consumer goods retailer Penny Market is deemed Lidl's strongest competitor. Penny Market opened its first Bulgarian stores in the autumn of 2009 and said that it planned to open a total 50 outlets by the end of 2010. |

| German Lidl eyes 3% share on Bulgaria's market
German discount retailer Lidl seeks to capture a 3% share on Bulgaria's market within three years, Milena Dragiyska, manager of the company's local division, said as quoted by Regal magazine. The retailer will open its first outlets in the country on November 25 and will raise their number to between 20 and 25 by February 2011, with plans to roll out more units in the summer. Each store will have an average retail space of 1,000 square metres, with the first shops planned in Sofia, Montana, Petrich, Plovdiv, Kurdzhali, Stara Zagora, Sliven, Gabrovo, Lovech and Varna. At the turn of 2010, the store operator will open other outlets in Plovdiv, Varna and Sofia, as well as in Rousse, Velingrad and Veliko Turnovo. The company will simultaneously unveil the re-branded Plus stores, recently acquired by the German retailer, which currently number 24. In the summer of 2011, Lidl will step in cities located on the Black Sea coast, including Burgas and Varna, and will also open units in regional centres such as Pleven. Lidl aims to have developed a network of up to 25 outlets by the end of the financial year in Germany, or February 28. The retailer has so far invested over EUR 100 million in its Bulgarian stores, Dragiyska said. The company has also paid an additional EUR 300,000 for each unit's equipment. Lidl's retail chain expansion in Bulgaria is being funded with own funds. Earlier in 2010, parent Schwarz Group applied for a loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development to fund the operations of Lidl and peer Kaufland in the region. |

| From reading this I would say there were several that have opened ????
Crowds Clash as New Lidl Stores Open in Bulgaria
Clashes between crowds of eager shoppers erupted across Bulgaria as they rushed to secure a bargain at the opening of several Lidl supermarkets Thursday.
Fortunately, nobody has been seriously hurt.
A woman suffered minor injuries in the stampede as crowds swarmed to the Lidl store in the Bulgarian town of Sliven.
In Sofia, Mayor Yordanka Fandakova had foresightedly called the police in advance.
The turmoils were caused by the German retailer's considerable discounts, even though the customers were limited to buying certain maximum amounts of goods.
Up to 3 kg of bargain-prized bananas were allowed per shopper.
German discount retailer Lidl opened its first stores in Bulgaria on Thursday morning, offering shockingly low prices, a move that will certainly heat up further the competition in the sector.
The fourteen shops are located in eleven cities - Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna, Stara Zagora, Pazardzhik, Sliven, Kurdjali, Petrich, Montana, Lovech and Gabrovo.

| Silly people stampeding :LMHO:If you look on the Lidl BG site, you'll find they have not that many loss leaders - bananas at 0.69 per kg, cucumbers at 0.33 per kg and another 26 items that do not seem ridiculously cheap to me. Is it worth ending up in hospital for 3kg of cheap bananas? |
