The troubled UK Border Agency is to be abolished and brought back within the Home Office, the home secretary, Theresa May has announced. Now that this minister has failed in such a spectacular fashion will we be treated to the sight of her " falling on her sword" ? A consummation devoutly to be wished but with the lack of integrity within the current crop of politicians I don't think I'll be holding my breath.

Oh we're going to reinvent another whole government department, rehire the same staff again, change all the name plates on the doors and all the headed notepaper, reinvent the IT system and the policies and procedures....... and all in the name of efficiency. How many departments is it now that've had this treatment? PCTs, GCSEs, Probation, Universal Credit, Work Programme, Police Commissioners... have I missed any? Seems an awful lot of money's being spent on this crap in a time of no cash.

Now I am sure people on here know how I feel about poiticians, however I am a fair minded individual and feel I have to at least speak up in defence of Teresa May, (not something I thought I would ever do). To blame her entirely for the failure of Border Agency is not entirely fair, she may be the current incumbent of the post of Home Secretary, but she did not create this agency and has merely inherited it with all its faults. The UKBA is underfunded, understaffed, suffers from poor leadership and lacks direction. There are many people who could and should have the finger pointed at them for the failure of the UKBA, Teresa is just the latest in a long line of people who were unable to get to grips with this problem. Also another point to mention re prisons, Itchyfeet, I assume that you are aiming your comment at Chris Huhne and his wife being transferred to an open prison. I think that this is usual practice for non violent , first offenders (never been caught before), these people are no threat to society and are unlikely to abscond. What they did was wrong and absolutely stupid if not breathtakingly arrogant, however the offence for which they have been convicted is seen by the courts probably on a daily basis. They have been sent to prison not necessarily for what they did but for who they are and they fact that justice has to be seen to apply to everyone in society. I cant believe I have actually come to the defence of politicians, time for a Brandy and a lie down, I think.... Ray

Enjoy your little lie down Ray, but what you wrote is very valid..she isn't the brightest star in the sky, but she also didn't cause the current problem with the BA.

Sounds like they will be pensioning off a few more people, maybe they've heard about that great land called Bulgaria and want to get a foot in whilst they can, and with their early retirement handout that help the property prices a little more. Anyone want to buy a few hardly used second-hand laptops, because they will need the revenue to help fund the new ones required for all the new staff.

Slightly :OffTopic:but I thought this was the best place to post rather than start another topic. Another loss for Teresa May [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]Terror kingpin Abu Qatada's freedom to cost taxpayer £100,000 weekly in surveillance cost THE hate preacher's successful bid for freedom means security services will have to embark on an expensive programme to keep tabs on him. Radical cleric Abu Qatada has won his deportation battle TERROR mastermind Abu Qatada will be freed from jail today – and cost the British taxpayer £100,000 a WEEK to watch his every move. A judge at a special immigration court in London ruled the 52-year-old fanatic could not be deported to Jordan because he was not guaranteed a fair trial there. Mr Justice Mitting also ordered that Qatada should have “standard” bail conditions because he did not want to deprive him of his liberty after seven years in jail. The hate preacher will be free to walk the streets between 8am and 4pm daily. The development is a blow to Home Secretary Theresa May, who boasted in April that she was “confident” of finally getting rid of him. May told MPs yesterday: “The Government have been doing everything we can to get rid of Abu Qatada and we will continue to do so.” Qatada, branded Osama Bin Laden’s ambassador in Europe, was convicted of terror charges in Jordan in his absence in 1999. By that time, he was already living in Britain and claiming asylum after arriving on a fake passport. Qatada will be watched by Scotland Yard, MI5 and Serco, a private security company. He will be banned from using the internet and mobile phones

If this man is all they say he is, then why not put him before a court and present the evidence to a judge and jury? That way we all find out just exactly how much of threat he is, or I am I over simplyfying matters. Ray
