Three Settlements Drink Arsenic Polluted Water
Dangerous levels of arsenic discovered in drinking water of three villages
Five thousand residents in the town of Meri Cleri, famous for its mineral springs, and nearby villages Velikan and Tatarevo were shocked after finding out that tap water in their houses is polluted with arsenic. Since Thursday potable water has been brought in tanks to these settlements – the regional public health inspectorate banned use of tap water there. It has remained unclear how long people were drinking poisoned water. Arsenic levels in water reached 20 microgram per liter, as the admissible concentration is 10 micrograms, explained the inspectorate director Dr. Delcho Yanev. He ruled out the possibility of deliberate water poisoning right away. Yanev added that wells in the three settlements are under control around the clock. The local Water Supply and Sewerage agency denied comment when asked why the population was not informed about the dangerous arsenic concentration on time.
