| Bulgarians eat, drink, smoke and travel less
The economic crisis has had a profound effect on Bulgarians, as most people have been forced to make adjustments to cope with dwindling disposable income.
According to a poll by the Mediana agency, 27 per cent of Bulgarians are saving money on smoking, about 40 per cent are drinking less, 56 per cent are eating less, 60 per cent are spending less on clothes, and 43 per cent are avoiding long journeys.
However, in one respect nothing has changed – 34.5 per cent of Bulgarians gamble regularly, the report said, although bets have decreased in size.
Most Bulgarians play Toto, or the sports totalisator, 30.3 per cent, followed by the state lottery, 11.2 per cent, Euro football 7.8 per cent and Euro-chance 2.1 per cent.
The poll, however, did not state the size or demographics of the sample. |

| I am surprised that they are actually eating less in such large numbers - one can easily quit drinking and at least cut down on smoking, but so many eating less is a very significant indicator of the dire straits the economy finds itself in. Whereas not drinking and smoking are a bonus health-wise, not eating can obviously be very deleterious. - Admin wrote:

| an elderly bulgarian lady in our village lost her husband last year, her daughter came over after 8 years in the uk, to help with the funeral. and was horrified by the price increases across the board. her mum has been eating out of the garden, she does not have enough money left to purchase a loaf of bread. those with the least, are hit the hardest. |
