No Raise of Bread Price in Bulgaria until September



The price of bread will not go up in the next two months, the Chair of the Regional Union of Bread and Pastry Manufacturers from the Bulgarian city of Dobrich has announced.

“I do not expect a raise in the price of bread until the end of August,” the Chair Toshko Nyagolov said Tuesday and added that the price of bread has not changed since the fall of 2009 and it stays between BGN 0.9 and BGN 1 per kg.

Nyagolov noted that the real price of bread is between BGN 1.5 and BGN 1.6 per kg or between BGN 0.9 and BGN 1 per 700g.

“Now we work on the verge of survival. The bread-making field provides the smallest salaries – between BGN 300 and BGN 400, and many manufacturers have cut the staff by 30% and 50%,” he said.

Nyagolov added that in February the Union proposed the introduction of new Bulgarian standard for the bread.

“We hope that this will happen soon, and then the price of bread will be totally different after we stop using many supplements that currently replace the flour,” Nyagolov said.

In the beginning of July, the Bulgarian government announced it will introduce the state standard for the production of "
real"
yogurt.

According to Dimitar Zorov, President of the Association of Milk producers, the implementation of the state standard will not lead to increase in the price of yogurt.

bread is a vital product for many poor in bulgaria, rises in this product would mean that their staple diet, if you can call it that, would result in starvation for many and many of their animals which are fed bread, not good. many of us fail to realise or do not know the level of poverty that exists in some villages here, as costs are rising in all areas the poorest are hit the hardest. i have a lovely gipsy ( can i say that) lady who i have to help with domestic chores and in the 3 years i have known her, she is struggling more now than in the past to make ends meet. its getting harder and harder with the price rises of basic needs to cope with the demands of a growing family. sometimes we dont know how lucky we are.

Bulgaria to Enjoy 'Real' Bread in Months

The Bulgarian Chamber of Industrial Bread and Pastry Producers has submitted three projects for state standards of bakeries in the Agriculture Ministry.

The projects concern three types of bread - white, wheat, and “Dobrudzha” - and will be discussed with experts and bakery technologists in order for one consensus option to be prepared.

The BDS for yogurt has already been introduced. By the end of July the one for brined cheese will be ready too.

The meat producers have also stated they are working on a project for a state standard for meat and added that it will take them more time due to the bigger variety of meat products.

The reintroduction of the Bulgarian state standard (BDS) for foods began a few weeks ago, after it was abolished in 1998 with the argument that Bulgaria had to harmonize its regulations with those of the EU.

The new BDS will include the exact requirements for producing certain food products. Bulgaria's Minister for Foods, Miroslav Naydenov has explained that BDS will not be mandatory, but rather recommendable, but its sign on a label will guarantee the consumers that the used products are real.

The companies that want to follow the BDS will have to register at the Bulgarian Patent Office and pay BGN 300. However, it has not been announced how long would the registration take.

Standards for three types of bread had to be submitted by early September to Agriculture Minister Miroslav Naydenov. For now, their options for prescription state have only Branch Chamber of bread and pastry industry in Bulgaria.

In the proposal, the bread will be made only of flour, salt, yeast and water. Only in individual cases will be allowed to benefit improvements. Bleaching chemicals in the flour, including malt, which is now widely used to improve the appearance of bread will be banned.

In a bread recipe no state can be used and no preservatives and colorings. The recipe for the three types of bread is roughly the same, the difference comes only from the type of flour.

- type meal. Inside the bread must be of uniform color and without lumps, and upper and lower crusts should have a thickness of 1,5 and 2 mm.

Another increase of bread is possible if wheat prices continue to rise worldwide

The granaries are empty. Greedy grain traders exported this year?s harvest of wheat, bakers and millers warned. Only via Varna port total 1.214 tons of wheat were exported, according to the port?s chief, Captain Danail Papazov.
To avoid problems on the Bulgarian market the exported wheat should not exceed 490 000 tons annually, the calculations of the Ministry of Agriculture point out. According to the same source, today millers do not avail of more than the wheat to last them three months. After that Bulgaria will have to resort to import.
Some of the bakeries and millers have started buying expensive foreign wheat for 500 levs per ton which causes an avalanche increase in prices of not only bread but also milk, meat and even leather products.
Meanwhile it must not be forgotten that grain traders must have made at least 100% profit. In the summer they bought out the wheat from farmers at 200 levs per ton and then sold it for at least 400 levs.
It is clear that in the situation of a functioning market economy state control on prices and export and import is excluded. Perhaps,though, a certain level of regulations is necessary at least when a strategic resource like wheat is concerned, experts commented.

Bread, cooking oil prices in Bulgaria set to go up, gradually

In the very first days of 2011 there were speculations about a possible rise in the prices of bread and cooking oil. The claim was that grain prices would go on rising with the effect of pushing bread prices up. More from Radio Bulgaria’s Maria Dimitrova.

If analysed carefully, the situation looks different. Unlike other regions of the world, where the latest grain harvest was ruined by natural disasters, Bulgaria’s grain is good in terms of both quantity and quality. On the other hand, Bulgarian grain producers had very good chances of selling their produce internationally, at quite lucrative prices. Domestic prices have increased as well.

“We have about 1.5 million tons of grain available,” said Bulgarian Minister of Agriculture and Food Miroslav Naydenov. “Until the next harvest, we will need a little below 1 million tons, meaning we do have a surplus. The grain balance of the country is not threatened at all: in fact we are free to export. So, any speculations about a possible deficit are groundless. We will have enough bread, and there is no reason for soaring prices of bread and cooking oil. The same is valid for the rest of the alimentary goods.”

The minister however, also pointed to a global trend under way of a gradual rise in the prices of foods, which is unlikely to bypass Bulgaria. As to bread producers, in Bulgaria they work in a very difficult environment. On the one hand, they are being pressed by high grain prices worldwide, and on the other, they come under pressure from the huge grey sector in their business. To make things even more difficult for them, a new, and powerful player has arrived to the sector in the recent years – the big retail chains, in turn pressing for lower prices. The government has vowed to intervene on the Bulgarian producers’ side in both cases – for cracking down on the grey sector, and against unfair practices of the big supermarket and discounter chains.

“It has turned out”, Minister Naydenov goes on the say, “that the relatively poor Bulgarian producers have been forced to subsidize big retail chains which by the way, are not Bulgarian. This takes place through contracts for rescheduled payment, schemes for return of unsold produce and above all, via powerful pressure on pricing, most often at the expense of quality.”

“Tempting promotions, extra discounts and various bonuses are never paid for by the retail chains, but by suppliers”, Georgi Popov from the Union of Bread Producers contends. “We pay all sorts of fees, for example we pay a fee for the improvements that a retail chain has made to its bread department, worded as something of the kind of retail area enhancement,” he adds.

In fact reports in the press about soaring prices of staples turned out to be linked to the original offers of Bulgarian producers in the negotiations with retail chains for the new contracting period. Quite naturally, they have set a higher margin in the hope of reaching acceptable end-prices in the unequal battle with the big retail chains.

“The bread that is currently sold in Bulgaria is priced below its prime cost because of the grey economy. However Bulgarians can hardly hope that with equal prices of the raw materials across EU countries, they will continue buying the cheapest bread in Europe. And the grain price trend is invariably upward”, concludes Georgi Popov from the Union of Bread Producers.

Like many things, this has also turned out to be untrue. Bread in Balchik has now gone up to 95 stotinki and is breaking the 1 lev barrier in some shops.

i too have seen prices going up. i get flour from the local mill and make my own bread.

We also make our own bread,although Bulgarian bread is nice,but ours is better and very fresh

Bulgarian Bread with New Standard

The Bulgarian Food Safety Agency and representatives of bread makers in Bulgaria are signing Tuesday the Bulgarian State Bread Standard.

The standard, named "
Bulgaria,"
will be presented by Agriculture Minister, Miroslav Naydenov, and will involve all three main types of bread sold in the country, made from three types of flour – white bread, the bread called Dobrudzha, the bread called Tipov. The bread with "
Bulgaria"
standard will have a special logo on the packaging.

In addition to high-quality flour, water, salt and yeast, when the crop is not good and there is a need, other substances to improve the bread can be added, the Federation of Bread and Pastry Makers informs, saying the exact substances would be revealed during the official presentation.

Bread with "
Bulgaria"
standard will be made only from flour from first and second group and second group B wheat. The salt amount will be significantly lower than the average currently used in the Bulgarian bread market.
