First topic message reminder :

Hi again, just wondered if anyone can recommend the best form of heating over there in BG.
I have heard that a log fire seems to be a popular choice, perhaps economical. Hopefully won't need heating till we actually move there but thought it's a good idea to plan ahead.
Really looking forward to moving over but just a teeny bit apprehensive as we don't know anyone nor do we know any of the traditions but we are prepared for a culture shock!
Have heard the Bulgarian people are very friendly and do hope we make friends with some ex pats.
We visited Bulgaria, liked what we saw and have done a lot of research but it's nice to get some guidance from those of you who have experienced the good, the bad and the ugly.
You all seem a really friendly lot so we are pleased to be a part of this forum and look forward to meeting up with some of you, having a few beers and a good laugh!

The Prity fire or wood burner central heating works well but you must over size this our house needs 25kw approx on central heating etc so i purchased the prity 34kw unit, it works fine but i think the smaller unit would have had some issues, we also burn coal its only about 8 leva for a large bag about 25-30kilo it burns hotter then wood so gets the heating system up and warmed better, but you must have the right type of unit to burn coal.

Wood needs oxygen feed from above the fuel area i.e. air vents in the top of the fire area
Coal needs oxygen feed from below so grills below the fire area.

you will need to obtaing 55-60c in you central heating water to get good effective heat

Under floor heating (this can be done with electric or wet system) only needs 27-30c heat in the water.

LPG, Oil, Solid Fuel and Electric are the options

Wood is cheap but needs to be 2 years old or more to give good heat dont let anyone sell you fresh cut wood it wont burn hot enough. wood has the added benefit of keeping you fit going out and cutting it up is a good way to spend a morning and you wont need heating on when you are doing this lol just get a good Axe

We have a dual system. Major part is a wood burning boiler with the pump backed up by a battery system, power outages are common place here. It is also coupled to a 3 phase electric heater but to be quite frank it is c**p. Put it on the other night and the house temp only reached 14 c. We know a first rate Plumber in Yambol so PM me if you need his help. The major plus on this guy is that he will not rip you off and gives excellent back up service.

1 answer ha ha Yes. Lasts for about three hours but the Electric has never been off for more than that in the winter ( fingers crossed).

Good info tony - many thanks. From an Expats point of view the heating system is one of the most important issues and probably the most expensive if the wrong system is installed.
