Bulgaria to Bask in Spring-Like Weather until Feb 20
The remainder of February will be pretty kind to the residents and guests of Bulgaria, despite warnings that the country is in for an especially cold and snowy winter.
The new week in Bulgaria will again be warmer than the usual for the month with highs set at between 9°C and 14°C. In Sofia the minimum temperature will be minus 3°C and the maximum 10°C.
Next Tuesday will be remembered as the hottest day this month with the mercury zooming up to 18°C in the region of Plovdiv, Pleven and Vidin.
On Wednesday, the wind will change its direction, bringing colder weather to the country. Temperatures will drop by several degrees, but no rains are expected.
The second half of the week will come with temperatures below zero. Cloudiness will increase, especially at higher altitudes. Winds will also increase but no significant snowfalls are expected.
A second warm wave will flow across the country as of the middle of the month, but temperatures will rise gradually, heralding a week of warm and sunny weather without rainfalls.
Temperatures will not be freezing cold even during the night, while in most parts of the country they will climb up to 13°C at noon.
The traditionally cold winter weather will flex it muscles again and show its full potential after February 22-23. |

A disappointment for many skiers across Bulgaria, or a pleasant respite from the cold that gripped the country for nearly a month – it all depends on your perspective – but a touch of spring will descend on Bulgaria until late February.
The new week will be significantly warmer than usual for February – and from the averages of a few days ago – with highs set at between 9°C and 14°C, the private television channel bTV reported. Sofia will also bask in the soft sunshine, with clear skies and temperatures between -3C and 10C on February 7.
It will remain warm, and predominantly sunny, with highs expected to peak in Sofia the following day, February 8, up to 13C. The mercury will reach 18C in Plovdiv, Pleven and Vidin, while in other parts of the country, temperatures could go as high as 22C, media reports said.
The weather forecast predicts that temperatures will drop on February 9 and 10, down to between -5C and 7C on average for the country. No major snowfall is expected and the weekend will be predominantly mild.
The soft touch of spring will continue for nearly two weeks. Another major cold snap over Bulgaria is not expected until February 23. |

Heavy snowfall, strong winds cause road mayhem near Bourgas - report
Heavy snowfall and strong winds have created havoc along the coast of Bulgaria, particularly near Bourgas, where snowdrifts have buried and stranded vehicles, and rescue services are struggling to free them, Dnevnik daily reported.
The harshest conditions are reported near the village of Mirolyubivo, near Kableshkovo, where large swathes of the road are currently impassable, Bulgarian news agency BTA reported on February 25 2011.
Several snowploughs are deployed on the scene but the process is difficult because of the strong winds. The Civil Protection Service has managed to extract three vehicles from the wall of snow, but several others are still stuck.
The road is not likely to be completely cleared and opened to traffic before the winds subside, the report said, quoting local authorities.
Because of the excessive snow, the Trakia Motorway between Bourgas and Karnobat is closed for traffic, the Road Infrastructure Agency reported. The detour is through Karnobat – Aitos – Bourgas.
Light snow is expected in most parts of the country and temperatures will vary from -3C in the north to 8C in Sandanski on the south west. Average for Bulgaria will be at about -2C, and 0C for Sofia, weather reports said.
Over the weekend, temperatures will drop further, as low as -10C for Sofia, although no further snowfall is expected. |
