Bulgaria’s Cabinet was expected to declare, at its meeting on November 14 2012, a continuous six-day holiday from May 1 to 6 2013.

May 1 2013, Labour Day, is a Wednesday and the declaration will make the following day a special public holiday, in turning linking up with Holy Friday on May 3 and Easter Monday on May 6 to create the six-day holiday.

A number of times in recent years, the period from Labour Day to the Eastern Orthodox Easter has been declared a continuous holiday, a decision that generally has stimulated domestic and regional tourism.

To make up for the special public holiday on May 2, May 11 – a Saturday – will be declared a “working day”.

For Protestants and Roman Catholic Christians, Easter 2013 comes much earlier, with Easter Sunday on March 31. In 2013, Passover – the festival at which the events to which Easter refers took place about two millennia ago – begins at sunset on March 25 and ends on April 2.

Later in 2013, Tuesday December 31 will be a day off by Cabinet decree, with Saturday December 14 declared a working day to compensate.
