| Subject: Bulgarian Lessons - The Verb 'to be' Wed Apr 20, 2011 4:37 pm | |
| the verb 'to be'
These are the affirmative forms! Bulgarian verbs have different forms for every person!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I am --> Aз cъм az sum *also written as az sam and az sym
You are (singular)--> Ти cи ti si
He is --> Той е toi e
She is --> Тя е tya e * also written as tq e (due to that я = q on a bulgarian keyboard)
It is --> То е to e
We are --> Hие cме nie sme
You are (plural & polite) --> Вие cте vie ste
They are --> Те cа te sa
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To create the negative form, put 'не' (the Bulgarian for 'no') in front of the verb 'to be'...
I am not --> Aз не cъмaz ne sum
You are not (singular)--> Ти не cи ti ne si
He is not --> Той не е toi ne e
She is not --> Тя не е tya ne e
It is not --> То не е to ne e
We are not --> Hие не cмеnie ne sme
You are not (plural & polite) --> Вие не cтеvie ne ste
They are not --> Те не cа te ne sa
Note: notice that the negative article comes before the verb and NOT after like it does in English..so there for the forms ''аз cъм не'', ''ти cи не'' etc... are NOT correct!!! |

It may look better (especially to folks that recognize the cyrillic alphabet), but if somebody follows the lesson and says 'tik' to their neighbour and not 'tuk' then it can cause problems. If you are going to use phonetic pronunciation in the lessons, please make them correct so that folks can try and speak. |

And I am going to make videos when I get round to it..maybe you could help me with that? |

I spent 10 years as a training instructor with one of the biggest companies in the World (Apple). I was responsible for training in the UK, USA, Germany, France, Belgium and a few other places.
Two things this taught me:
1. If people want to 'skip' to lesson 12 as this lesson interests them, they will (never assume they have done lessons 1-11)
2. If you teach them a mistake in any lesson then they will use that mistake for the rest of their lives.
As I requested, please, if you want to use phonetics for your pronunciation, ensure that it is correct and people will be understood (whether it looks pretty or not) |

| will the videos have the words spoken as they are by bulgarians? please, as we say some words a bit different & it can mean something totally different, thats why i like the surface language site, it speaks words out as they should be said & i think thats what we need, even more than the written words, thanks sandra |

here --> тък - tyk Small correction. Кой is transcribed as koy. It`s very important, because we also have Кои which is transcribed as koi, and it also means who, but for plural. Example : Кой е този човек? / koy e tozi chovek/ - Who is this man? Кои са тези хора? / koi sa tezi hora/ - Who are this people? й =/= iRemember that which cty are you from? - I don`t think that normal bulgarians in informal situation will use that question. It`s more likely to ask ''Where are you from" which is Откъде си /otkade si/ here is тук /tuk/ The ъ sound is transcribed as /a/, because it`s nearer /a/, then /u/ or /y/ |
