REWE's Penny Market Chain Expands in Bulgaria's Capital Sofia

Penny Market, the German-owned discount supermarket chain, opened its second Sofia retail outlet on Friday.

The REWE subsidiary has continued its expansion and investment plan for Bulgaria, despite the financial crisis and its effects on consumers.

At a ceremony to mark the opening of the new store, Vasil Fecko, Penny Market’s Bulgaria Manager, confirmed the company expected to expand from the present 14 outlets to a total of 50 stores throughout the country by the end of 2010.

Penny Market had invested EUR 100 M and created 700 jobs in Bulgaria, he announced. Turnover at the first Sofia store had been satisfactory, despite the economic downturn, he added.

Armin Rehberg, a management representative of REWE Group, the parent company, explained that, even when a country’s economy was in decline, the discount chain made progress. When the economy picked up, their business surges ahead.

REWE Group also owns Billa, which has been on the Bulgarian market for several years. The group operates in 16 European countries and is the fourth largest food chain in Europe.

Penny Market a subsidiary of the German owned Rewe Group have opened in Dobrich, just a short distance from Erka3. A little bit like a Lidl but not so good!! But still a great new addition for Dobrich.

Hoardings are also up for Plus supermarket, another discounter who will also be opening up in Dobrich.

Not forgetting work is also under way on the site for Carrefour's hypermarket also opening in Dobrich.

Penny Market and Plus open stores in Bulgaria

The German diversified discount retail chain Penny Market opened its first batch of 14 stores in Bulgaria, a press company release said.

The stores are in Sofia, Veliko Turnovo, Rousse, Vratsa, Radomir, Lovetch, Nova Zagora, Botevgrad, Svilengrad, Knezha, Novi Pazar, Pavlikeni and Dobrich. The company has said that 20 more stores are poised to open for business by the end of 2009 and by the end of 2010 there will be a total of 50 stores operating in the country.

Penny Market, a division of retail giant Rewe, is based in Germany, operating in nine countries in Central and Eastern Europe. Rewe Group is already represented in Bulgaria through discount retail chain Billa.

Another German discount chain, Plus, part of Tengelmann Group, has opened six stores in Sevlievo, Harmanli, Pernik, Silistra and Gorna Oriahovitsa. The company has similar plans for extension in the country as Penny Market, with 25 stores planned for the end of 2009 and 50 by the end of 2010, Dnevnik daily reported on November 16.

Similar to a Lidl but without as much choice. Mainly the usual Bulgarian fare you see in every shop, but with some different lines too.

Penny Market to Roll Out 50 Units in Bulgaria by End-2010

Penny Market (Rewe Group), German soft discounter with an aggressive growth strategy for Bulgaria, announced it wants to build a 50-unit network in the country by the end of the year.

The news comes shortly after German retailer Tengelmann launched talks to sell its discount retail chains in Romania and Bulgaria to rival Lidl, which is part of Germany's Schwarz retail group.

Tengelman, the parent company of Plus, owns 94 and 16 stores in Romania and Bulgaria respectively.

According to realtors the economic crisis in the past year has proved fertile for the discount retailers stepping on Bulgarian soil in recent months and the country will see their boom in 2010.

Three food discount chains are currently operating in Bulgaria;
Kaufland, Penny Market and Plus.

Penny supermarket is so well-frequented in Balchik, you can hardy move for NO-ONE being there at all. A lot of their shelves are already empty and not being restocked. There is normally only one cashier and that's plenty. Eat their brinza and be sick - I know someone who has twice (different cheap brands). They sell cheap rubbish and if that's what you want, go there - Bulgarians don't anymore.

After verification, the inspectors of the Regional Directorate for Food Safety Dobrich temporarily halted work on the subject of "

Germany’s REWE Pulls out PENNY Discounter from Bulgaria

Germany’s supermarket group REWE said on Wednesday it will withdraw completely from discount business in Bulgaria with all PENNY stores ceasing to operate by the end of next month.

REWE Group will focus on full-range store business with PENNY’s sister company BILLA Bulgaria taking over the logistics centre in Stolnik near Sofia and - where possible - some of the current 49 PENNY outlets in the country, REWE said in a statement.

“Where possible, PENNY employees will be offered a continued employment at BILLA Bulgaria,” the statement read. “The employees who cannot be offered employment opportunities will receive severance pay in excess of that required by law.”

Currently, REWE operates 92 BILLA supermarkets in Bulgaria.

In the future, the REWE Group will focus its international discount activities with PENNY on business in the other five countries where it currently operates: Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Italy and Romania.

PENNY opened its first discount store in Bulgaria in 2009.
