Bulgarian Pensioners Excited by Snail-Breeding Opportunities

An increasing number of retired Bulgarians are interested in starting snail farms, the National Snail-Breeding Cluster announced.

Over 100 pensions have submitted applications for project funding administered by the Cluster for the creation of snail farms free of charge, including an 89-year-old woman, according to Simona Mollova, a consultant of the not-for-profit organization.

The Cluster has attracted sponsorship from private companies, including a bank and an insurance company, and is going to fund the creation of at least 10 snail farms in 2010.

It has extended the deadline for submitting applications until March 31, 2010. The applicants must be able-bodied retired people owning appropriate plots of land, with a monthly pension of no more than BGN 250.

The expected snail yield from the pensioners’ farms is 4-6 tons per decare;
depending of quality of the snails and the technology for their breeding, they could be sold for EUR 6-40 per kilogram, which means an income of at least EUR 30 000 per decare.

The profit will be distributed between the farmer, the bank, and the insurance company, which have provided the funding.

Snail Breeding Turns Profitable in Bulgaria

The price of healing ingredients from snails is 26 times higher than the one of rose oil, and has turned snail breeding in Bulgaria into a profitable business.

The information was reported Monday by Simona Mollova, Chief Consultant with the Bulgarian National Snail Breeding Cluster (NOK).

The value of these ingredients, which can be found in snail slime, is EUR 130 per gram while the maximum price ever reached for Bulgarian rose oil on global markets has been EUR 5 000 per kilogram.

Until now, the ingredients have been used in scar-healing lotions while snail meat has been recommended also for the healing of wounds and against measles.

Currently, a Sofia hospital, along with a German clinic, are conducting medical trials for the anti-bacterial, anti-cancer of urinary tract and kidneys, and immune system boast effects of snail slime.

Cultivated Bulgarian snails - 26 times more expensive than the rose oil

The cost of these ingredients present in the mucus of the snail, is 130 Euro per gram, indicating Pavlina Dolashka Institute of Organic Chemistry Academy of Sciences, which runs a research team exploring the properties of the products of Bulgarian snails harvested in the NCA.
The maximum price of our rose oil in international markets has reached 5,000 Euro per kilo, which means $10 per gram.

So far the ingredients of snails were used only creams that heal scars of wounds grooves and patterns. Bactericidal activity of secretions of snails tested in a hospital in Sofia and in the Urology Clinic in Tübingen, Germany, where the treated tumours of the urinary tract and kidneys.

Meat extract of abalone, which is extremely rich in peptides, it is recommended to strengthen the immune system, especially for people who work at high load, and athletes said Dolashka.

For rabotatat their team of the institute receives funding from Germany, Italy and Belgium.

Your right Pixi they seem to move at about the same speed so I would think they will make a fortune Bulgarian Pensioners Excited by Snail-Breeding Opportunities 2381841692 but on the serious side this sounds like something a lot of Bulgarians will take on I mean they are always in their garden and it wouldn't take them much to create a snail factory in the garden after all they are all very clever when it comes to this kind of thing s

Bulgarian snail – No 1 worldwide!

The bad reputation of the snail, calling it clumsy and helpless is really undeserved! The small creature does deserve more attention and… respect. The great scientific interest towards it, shown in this country and abroad proves that. Its subject is the Bulgarian garden Helix pomatia, since this representative of the mollusks is one precious healer of many diseases. It is even on its way to replace botox! Products, based on snails will be exposed in the beginning of November at the Innovations’ Exhibition in Sofia.

There are over 100 snail farms all over the country that work with full capacity, thus bringing good profits to their owners. 1g of lyophilized mucus from Bulgarian Helix costs about EUR 40 on the global markets. The good qualities of this mollusk make Italy, Spain, France, Japan etc. look for it. Besides being tasty, snails can smooth wrinkles just like magic. That is why their mucus is an ingredient of some of the most expensive facial cosmetics. At the same time scientists from several European laboratories have researched for years the healing properties of the Bulgarian snail, related to the immune system and tumors. Actually, what is the big difference from the other snails around the globe? Associate Professor Pavlina Dolashka from the Institute of Organic Chemistry with the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences is the head of the scientific team that studies the properties of the Bulgarian snail. Scientists from Germany, Belgium, Italy and other EU countries participate in it.
“We are glad that Bulgarian nature is not that polluted yet. We have magnificent mountains and beautiful flora, Mrs. Dolashka explains. The snail on the other hand appears to be a biological indicator. Besides that our snail takes via its food the Lactobacillus bulgaricus bacteria that grows in Bulgaria only.”

This bacteria that can only be found in Bulgarian snails stimulates the immune system, reduces intestine toxins and assimilates cholesterol. No wonder then that the snail was respected by traditional medicine. Our grandparents used to swallow snails that were still alive, for the healing of gastric and ulcer. Now the team of Associate Prof. Dolashka has developed a special “snail syrup” for such problems that is about to be released on the market. The team has managed to isolate mucus extract with high content of collagen, elastin, allantoin etc. that not only makes the skin look younger, but also recovers scarves and wounds. “We created a wound gel. The effect is striking! Our snail soap is ready too. It is one of the few animals with blue blood that contains hemocyanin – a good anti-tumor effect.

“We have examined its properties for over 20 years now,” Associate Prof. Dolashka explains. “Now we test it in a German clinic of urology on tumor cells of patients. The hemocyanin has effect! We have positive results with the healing of bladder cancer. Substances are being created from the meat of snails that will stimulate the immune system and the whole body after a certain illness.”

Japanese people look for Bulgarian snails for their tasty meat, French people want them for the caviar, Italians import great quantities for their cosmetic industry etc. Thus the snail becomes one of the symbols of Bulgaria, along with yogurt and roses!

Makes my mind boggle seeing that picture of dozens of the things, mind you, I have eaten them in a French restaurant and cooked with some garlic, they tasted rather nice and I feel that I could grow accustomed to eating them on a regular basis. Wouldn't want them scuttling all over my lawn when I came home at night time though, that crunching noise under my foot would put me off from having one for breakfast!!

Here's one with a real crunch Bulgarian Pensioners Excited by Snail-Breeding Opportunities 1865348797

Snail Fritters

Ingredients

1x snails canned or cooked
1x vegetable oil for frying
1x parsley sprigs for garnish
2large eggs separated
1 1/2cups flour, all-purpose
3tablespoons olive oil
1x salt and black pepper
1x herbs

Directions

First make the batter.

Mix the egg yolks with the flour and olive oil.

Add a little warm water to give a smooth, creamy consistency.

Season and leave to stand.

Just before using, gently fold in the stiffly beaten egg whites.

Drain the snails and marinade for 1 hour in the olive oil and chopped herbs (parsley, tarragon, chives, and chervil).

Drop the snails into the batter by the handful, then remove them one by one and drop into the hot frying oil (2 at a time in the case of petits-gris);
fry until golden brown, then drain on paper towels.

Serve garnished with fried parsley.
