Flooding and more bad weather for Bulgaria

Flooding affected several areas in Bulgaria on July 25 as authorities warned of further spells of bad weather.

The southern town of Saedinenie has been flooded, with authorities declaring a state of emergency on June 26, as a staggering 116 litres a sq m of rain fell in the area, the Civil Protection Service said in a statement, cited by Focus news agency.

The western part of the village was under water, according to Focus. Emergency teams along with the Civil Protection Service and the Fire Brigade are in the area.

Meanwhile, about 40 litres a sq m of rain fell on the town of Pazardzhik, south-central Bulgaria, by 3am on July 26, the Bulgarian meteorological institute website said.

Rainfall in Plovdiv and the surrounding region was 14 litres a sq m, 81 litres in Stara Zagora and 51 litres in Kazanluk, the report said.

According to forecast reports for July 25, heavy rain is expected in western and central Bulgaria and in the Rhodope Mountains. The weather system will then gradually shift eastward. In some areas, rain will be accompanied by thunderstorms, while temperatures will hover between 23 and 28C.

Along the Bulgarian coastline, skies will be cloudy with rainfall expected later in the afternoon. Mountains will be unsuitable for tourism.

More rain expected, some parts of Bulgaria still flooded

Parts of Bulgaria are slowly recovering from the torrential downpour over the past 48 hours which caused serious damage and disruption in some areas, the Civil Protection service said, cited by Bulgarian media on July 27.

Heavy rainfall triggered flooding in several areas in Bulgaria on July 25 and 26. The southern town of Saedinenie, in the municipality of Plovdiv, was flooded, with authorities declaring a state of emergency on June 26, as a staggering 116 litres a sq m of rain fell in the area, the Civil Protection Service said.

More than 500 homes were flooded. Many areas in Bulgaria were hit by continuous rain throughout July 26.

About 40 litres a sq m of rain fell on the town of Pazardzhik, south-central Bulgaria, while rainfall in Plovdiv and the surrounding region was 14 litres a sq m, 81 litres in Stara Zagora and 51 litres in Kazanluk, the report said.

On July 27, the situation was reported to be "
under control"
in most areas, except for the hardest hit town, Saedinenie. Rescue teams there were pumping out water from flooded houses, Bulgarian media reports said.

Conditions in areas around Varna and Dobrich were also to be reported to be "
near critical"
. Strong winds had brought down scores of trees and branches in and around Varna, obscuring traffic, while rescue teams had assisted more than 20 stranded vehicles, reports said.

Civil Protection service teams near Dobrich evacuated nine people – eight of them from the village of Branish where water flooded homes, reaching up to 1.5 metres.

The weather forecast for July 27 was for predominantly cloudy weather, with light rain expected to continue throughout Bulgaria.

Later in the afternoon, thunderstorms are expected and moderate wind will blow from the north-west. Average temperatures in Bulgaria for July 27 will be between 22 and 27°C, with 23°C for Sofia.

Conditions for mountaineering will be poor. Above 2000 metres, temperatures will be below 9C with strong winds, at times reaching hurricane intensity along the ridges. While winds in the mountains will be predominantly north-western, along the highest parts they will be mostly southern. Thick clouds, fog and thunderstorms are expected.

Moderate winds are expewacted along the coast, while the water temperature will be between 26 and 27C.

It's raining yet again. What happened to summer. It might be very hot but we have never seen so much rain as we have in June &
July. :Very sad:The area around Yambol City Centre is very wet indeed and the Tunja River is very swollen in fact there is water from one bridge edge to the other side in the Town. Now that has not happened in a very long while. The sun has got his hat on - Page 3 927475117

Hot Spell in August

Temperatures will reach 38C this week. Tuesday will be the hottest day, meteorologists warned. They advised elderly people, children and people with hypertension to avoid outdoor activities, especially about noon.
However, the scorching heat won’t last long - meteorologist forecast cool spell coming on Wednesday. Clouds will get thicker and in western Bulgaria are expected showers. During the night the cool air will sweep over the central regions. Thunderstorms are likely, too. On Friday, though temperatures again will be between 33C and 35C.
Don’t worry if you are planning vacation at the beach, meteorologists reassured. Along the Black Sea coast temperatures would not get lower than 31C, but would feel like 37C despite the light breeze. In mountain resorts temperatures will be about 25C.

Bulgaria Registers Record-High Sea Water Temperatures

The temperatures of the sea water along the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, which reached 30 degrees Celsius in the recent days, are the highest in 17 years, experts have announced.

The Bulgarian National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH) has stated that in the period 1993-1997, the highest temperature of the sea water was recorded in the town of Shabla and it was 27 degrees Celsius.

For the same period, the town of Kavarna registered a maximum sea water temperature of 25,8 degrees Celsius, Balchik - 26,2 degrees, the cities of Varna, Nesebar and Burgas – 25,6 degrees, 26,4 degrees and 26,8 degrees Celsius respectively.

A little higher were the temperatures in the period 1999-2009. According to data from NIMH, Kavarna recorded the highest sea water temperature – 28,4 degrees Celsius.

Shabla and Balchik registered a highest temperature of 27,2 degrees Celsius for the same period of time, while Varna, Nesebar and Burgas recorded a maximum of 27,4 degrees, 28 degrees and 28,1 degrees Celsius respectively.

NIMH has also presented data for Wednesday’s temperatures of the sea water in Russia and Ukraine, which were 28 degrees Celsius along the Russian coast and between 27,2 and 29,2 degrees Celsius in Ukraine.

“The temperatures in Bulgaria are a little bit higher, but they are not much different,” said Georgi Korchev, general director of NIMH.

In his words, these were the highest temperatures not only along the Bulgarian coast, but also along the Russian and Ukrainian coast.

Bulgaria Braces for Scorching Heat

39.2 degrees C were measured Sunday in Bulgaria’s hottest point, the town of Sandanski in the south-west.

The National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences forecasts that heats are set to continue in the first half of next week, with temperatures above or even well above 30 C across the country.

Short summer showers are previewed for Tuesday and Wednesday in some parts of western Bulgaria.

Wednesday the temperatures will drop with a couple of degrees.

The water along the Bulgarian Black Sea coast is registering record high temperatures, with 30-31 degrees C measured Sunday.
