Bulgarian weather forecast: thunderstorms and hail
A weather system will descend over Bulgaria bringing heavy precipitation, thunderstorms, torrential rain and in places, hail, weather reports said on July 8 2010.
Most of the country will be affected, while in some regions in eastern Bulgaria, the rain may reach up to 40 litres a sq m, Bulgarian television channel bTV said.
According to the Bulgarian meteorological service website, temperatures will decrease sharply from their levels on July 7, ranging from between 19 and 24C.
Along the Bulgarian seafront, the weather will be cloudy, windy, accompanied by thunderstorms and with heavy rain-showers. Conditions will be unsuitable for swimming, while the sea surge is expected to be moderate. Temperatures along the coast will be between 21 and 23C.
Mountaineering and hiking are also not recommended due to strong winds, in places reaching hurricane intensity. Thick fog, clouds, rain and thunderstorms are also to be expected in Rila and the Rhodope mountains as well as eastern Stara Planina.
Conditions on Vitosha mountain south of Sofia are also unsuitable for tourism. At 1200m, the temperature will be about 12C while higher up the mountains, at 2000m, it will drop down to about 6C, the meteorological website reported.
Sofia will be cloudy at about 19C. Rain and thunderstorms are expected in the afternoon, the report said. |

| Blast of Cold Air, Rain Hits Bulgaria [size=85:sn9ezqgd]Bulgaria's Black Sea port of Varna has been closed because of strong winds
After the relatively high temperatures earlier this week, Bulgaria has been hit on Thursday by a blast of cold air and torrential rains.
The daily temperatures fell by over 10 degrees C and the forecast is for the weather to remain cold, foggy and rainy in the next two days particularly in the Eastern and Northern parts of the country.
The drastic changes are attributed to a cold front bringing thunderstorms, downpours and strong winds.
Southern Bulgaria, a few villages near the town of Smolyan in the Rhodopi Mountains in particular, saw some of the heaviest downpours on Thursday – the village of Arda was hit by whopping 50 litres per sq meter for the last twenty-four hours.
Officials say the pouring rain is overwhelming the sewerage system's ability to drain the water, creating big puddles, increasing the risk of floods and slowing down traffic.
The rains are expected to abate on Saturday and the sunshine will come out over the whole country with the mercury zooming up during the weekend. |

More torrential rain, thunderstorms forecast for eastern Bulgaria
Heavy rain fell throughout eastern Bulgaria and along the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, with up to 70 litres a sq m of precipitation reported in Shabla in the north-east of the country, private Bulgarian television channel bTV said on July 9 2010.
Rain has been relentless for more than 12 hours in some areas and was at its most intense in Shabla and Dobrich, the report said. Authorities said that the heavy rains were also interspersed with a thunderstorm but " without serious damage sustained as a result of the storm so far" , bTV said.
The fire brigade was deployed in the road between Shabla and Fara to remove fallen trees, while a stranded vehicle with Hungarian tourists bound for the Black Sea was rescued.
Rain in Varna also lasted for more than 12 hours, with temperatures falling to 19C and below. Serious rainfall was also reported in the St St Konstantine and Elena resort near Varna.
Units from the Civil Protection Service are on alert to provide assistance if required, the report said.
According to the Bulgarian meteorological service, the weather conditions for July 9 would remain similar, with the weather system remaining over Bulgaria, with serious rainfall and thunderstorms expected over eastern Bulgaria for the second day running.
Along the seafront, the temperatures will be between 22 and 24C. Torrential rainfall in places is to be expected. |

Flood in Northern coast
In most places in northeastern Bulgaria the situation is complicated by the July floods. Heavy rain and windstorm struck the northern coast. Varna wind broke down trees and closed the port for the whole day, and in Balchik Shabla over the past day poured a record amount of rain over 200 liters per square meter. Our correspondents from Varna more about the situation.
People in Shabla say that the rain was so loud that formed a wall and turbulent gusts Broken trees.
The rain stopped at noon today only. Damage to houses, however, are nothing compared to the damage of agricultural land. People are worried that they will lose their crop.
Stormiest wind broke down three trees in Varna - injured and no damage. Port remained closed throughout the day, and temperatures dropped significantly. |

Bulgarian weather forecast: hot temperatures and thunderstorms
Scorching temperatures will continue to be the case over most of Bulgaria on July 19 and will remain the default setting for most of the week, although rain showers accompanied by thunderstorms are expected across the country, Bulgaria's meteorological service said.
The clouds will have cleared by the early hours on the morning of July 20, when the skies should be serene and hot once again – until later in the afternoon, when another spell of cloud cover and potential rain showers were expected.
Temperatures will range from 28C to as high as 36C in places, with Sofia being at about 28-30C. Some parts of south-west Bulgaria will reach 38C.
Along the coastline, conditions should be good for tourism although brief rain showers accompanied by thunderstorms were to be expected for a while in the afternoon. Gusts of wind were to be expected briefly from the north/north-east, while water temperature would be between 25 and 28C, the report said.
It is in the mountains that the weather conditions would be the most volatile and tourists, hikers and climbers were advised to be cautious. Heavy cloud cover, strong winds and thunderstorms were expected on July 19 along most western mountain ranges as well as Stara Planina.
Todorka summit in Pirin Mountain will be at about 8C with significant cloud cover, while Moussala in Rila Mountains would be at about 9C with occasional rain showers and thunderstorms. Cherni Vruh on Vitosha Mountain south of Sofia would be between 8Cand 12C, windy, and possible rain/thunderstorms.
On July 20, conditions along most Bulgarian mountains will be better and no precipitation was expected. |
