Winter Weather Grips Bulgaria
The Sofia City Hall informs cleaning contractor companies have treated all roads in the capital used by public transportation vehicles.
The Bulgarian capital Sofia awoke Monday morning under a blanket of fresh snow.
Traffic conditions are treacherous and traffic is slow, but public transportation is not experiencing significant delays.
The City Hall reminds all drivers to adhere to speed limits; get on the road only if their automobile is ready for the winter weather, and use extreme caution.
Roads in the country are passable under winter conditions, the Road Infrastructure Agency informs.
Roads are wet and covered with snow; there is ice on higher elevations. The Trakiya and Hemus highways are also wet with icy spots on Hemus near the Black Sea city of Varna.
The mountain passes Tvarditsa-Elena, Etropole-Zlatitsa, Varbishki and Dyulinski are closed. Trailers are banned in the passes Troyan-Karnare and Vratnik, and on most roads in the Rhodope Mountains.
Heavy snow is reported in the eastern Regions of Varna and Dobrich with low visibility and impeded traffic.

| Cold snap over Bulgaria
Winter is staging a comeback with cold and overcast conditions on January 24, accompanied by mild snowfall in most parts of the country, the Bulgarian meteorological website reported.
For the most part, it will be calm with slow to moderate north westerly winds along especially along the Danube valley. Maximum temperatures will be between -2C and 3C, while the average will be between -5C and -3C. In Sofia it will be between -8C and -3C.
It will snow in the mountains and, above 2000m, temperatures will be well below -10C. Strong south westerly winds are expected along the ridges, however, visibility and conditions for mountaineering will be poor.
Light snowfall is also expected along the coastline, especially in the north, while temperatures will be between -2C and 0C.
A more powerful cold snap is expected to descend over the country later in the week. by January 26, temperatures are expected to drop to -15C in some parts in north west Bulgaria.
Snow ploughs were deployed across Sofia several times overnight, the private television channel bTV reported. Public transport in the capital is operating without considerable delays. |

Winter conditions in Bulgaria make roads hazardous
Winter has settled in over Bulgaria in the past few days and with temperatures continuing to drop and the snow cover accumulating, traffic police (KAT) have warned motorists that they should be extremely cautious when driving on January 26 2011.
On most motorways, first class roads and major streets and boulevards across Bulgaria, there are icy patches which could be dangerous. The roads have been treated, cleared of snow, and sanded, authorities say. But as the operation continues and more grit is applied, there will be inevitably some areas that will remain hazardous.
On the morning of January 26, the public transport system in Sofia was operating normally, with minor delays.
Trakia, Hemus and Maritsa motorways are wet in places, moisture which is likely to turn to ice as temperatures decrease. Additionally, thick fog near Lom, where the visibility was down to 50m, and near Samuil, Koubrat, Loznitsa and Dobritch, where visibility was about 100m, was contributing to driving conditions being dangerous.
The mountain passes at Zlatitsa – Etropole, Tvurditsa – Elena and the Vurbishki pass are closed for all vehicles, Dnevnik daily said. The Dolinski and Toyan – Kurnare passes were closed to lorries, but open for regular vehicles. All other mountain passes were open but vehicles must be fitted with chains.
It will be a beautiful, calm, and predominantly clear winter day on January 26. Clouds will accumulate later in the afternoon, while along the Danube valley, there will be fog until about noon, but for the most part, new snow cover is not expected.
Excellent conditions for mountaineering as the weather on higher elevations will be calm and serene, with about -12C at 2000m. It will be sunny along the Black Sea coast as well, temperatures ranging from 4C to -7C.
Average temperatures across the country will be between 2C and -10C, but areas in the north west will be as chilly as -15C. Sofia will be between 2C and -11C, according to the Bulgarian meteorological service website. |

Can someone tell the Mayor this in Balchik. Roads have not been cleared and they don't know what grit or sand is. |
