Celebrating the Day of Bulgarian cinema - without Bulgarian films

January 13 has been declared as the day of Bulgarian cinema by a Government Decree since 2005. The day celebrates the achievements of the Bulgarian cinema, and commemorates its actors, screenwriters, producers and all its employees.

January 13 was actually celebrated as the day of the cinema as far back as 1915 when the first Bulgarian film - Bulgarian Gallant - by Vassil Gendov was screened, featuring Mara Lipina and Vassil Gendov himself.

But on its sixth anniversary of it being recognised by the Government, January 13 2011 will pass quietly without a single new Bulgarian film being promoted and aired in any cinema across the country, Dnevnik daily reported.

The only cinema which currently screens a Bulgarian movie in Sofia is Vlaikova, where you could see Mission London.
