Bulgarian Banitsa Empty
PostSubject: Bulgarian Banitsa   Bulgarian Banitsa Icon_minitimeSat Nov 07, 2009 5:12 pm

Easiest thing to make ever and is amazing for Breakfast when its fresh cooked!!!

ingredients:

Sirene
Filo pastry
Egg
Fizzy water
Vegetable or Sunflower oil

My way is simply

1) Put little oil in baking tray
2) Put a layer of filo
3) Put some Sirene
4) Put a layer of filo
5) put some oil
6) Repeat steps 2 to 5 until you have used your filo up
7) cut your banitsa into the sizes you want
8) Mix 3 or 4 eggs with a drop of fizzy water
9) pour egg mixture on banitsa then move tray around to cover all the top of the banitsa
10) stick in the oven for around 40 to 45 mins on gas mark 6

Banitsa ...Done!!!

I love it and make it a few times a month :)

Sirene is Bulgarian white cheese, very much like the Greek Feta (but nicer as its got a smoother taste) You wont get any stick from me bless you...oh if your in the UK just use feta as a substitute

Im glad you liked it :) you can put as much or as little cheese as you want for taste, or alternatively you can put cabbage instead of cheese (I prefer cheese!)

Banitsa is really nice for breakfast so theres an idea for your left overs ;
)

When I make banitsa one baking tray is enough for two people for a few days!

Hi mugshot I love this and I have eaten a fair bit of it when I was in Bg it was my favorite breakfast dish although I do confess I use to eat it all the time but to be honest no matter how I tried it always tasted better when the neighbor cooked it and bought it over [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Lol all food tastes better when someone else makes it

I will admit though that Banitsa made by my wifes Grandma is the best Banitsa I have ever tasted!

My Banitsa is nice but does not compare to my wifes grandmas....even though her baba even scrimps on the sirene!!

mmm one of my favourite versions is cheese and spinach.

Another top favourite of mine is to replace the sirene in the recipe above with roasted pumpkin with a sprinkle of sugar ... delicious!
