Heatwave over Bulgaria to last

Bulgaria will be subjected to several more days of a heatwave that will reach 40C in places, the meteorological service website said on August 16 2010.

People are advised to take every precaution necessary and avoid going out during the hottest hours of the days, and to hydrate as much as possible.

Average temperatures of between 35 and 40C for most of the country, with 32C-35C along the sea front, are expected. The water temperature will be warm at about 31C.

The weather will be exceptionally warm, even in the mountains at high altitude. At 2000 metres, temperatures will be at about 21C. Conditions will be sunny and calm.

Children and the elderly are the most vulnerable and should avoid direct exposure to sunlight for prolonged periods of time. Over the weekend, more than 200 people collapsed because of heat strokes and had to be hospitalised, the private Bulgarian television channel bTV said.

Bulgarians Hope for Shorter Working Hours over Heat

Bulgaria's General Labor Inspectorate Executive Agency has suggested that employers should take into consideration the high temperatures and provide healthy and safe work conditions to their employees.

The agency has announced that there are no specific rules for work regime when the temperatures exceed 30 degrees Celsius, but there are optimal work place standards for temperature and air velocity, depending on the category of labor and the season.

The standards concern work places in the premises of enterprises for all industries.

The labor inspectorate agency also advised that employers should apply all possible technical and organizational measures for limiting the negative effect of the work environment on the employees' health.

“The sustained exposure to high temperatures can lead to heat stress. Heat rashes and fainting are the first symptoms of excessive heat exposure. If measures are not taken in the first phase of the heat stress, it can lead to heat stroke or exhaustion,” officials from the agency said.

They have explained that technical measures include technical means for cooling down the premises and providing fresh air for workers.

Additionally, sun blinds, fans and equipment for air-conditioned leisure premises could be provided with the recommendation that the difference in temperature between the work and leisure rooms does not increase 10 degrees Celsius.

Another tactics, suggested by the agency, is for the employer to undertake organizational measures like changing and decreasing the work hours for a certain period of time.

The recommended working clothes should be made of cotton and should be comfort and air permeable.

September Brings Lower Temperatures, Winds to Bulgaria

The scorching weather that swept Bulgaria for the most part of August is coming to an end and the next month will bring lower temperatures and winds, forecasts say.

Highs are forecast to vary between 28C and 33C across the country during the first two weeks of the month. The heat will come off the boil on September 12, when spells of cold air will cool down the country from the sweltering weather and push the mercury down.

Lows have been set to range between 4C and 9C.

These days will bring scattered rain showers in western and central Bulgaria, which may be accompanied by thunderstorms.

The weather will become more stable in the last four-five days of the month.

End of Summer as Temperatures Plummet in Bulgaria

Weathermen have pronounced end of meteorological summer in Bulgaria, as spells of cooler air are set to pass through the country Sunday, dropping temperatures by more than 10 degrees C.

Saturday was one of the hottest days of summer 2010, with 38 C measured at some points, and multiple temperature records broken.

The night marked the change in the weather, with cool gusts of wind, coming from the West and North-West. where the change will be most palpable.

Bulgaria’s long weekend weather

The celebration of Unification Day on September 6 2010 means a three-day weekend in Bulgaria, but prospects for good weekend weather as summer nears its end seem mixed.

The capital city, Sofia, appears set to the worst off, with most forecasts predicting rain showers on all three days, and the capital city offering weather that will partly cloudy at best, with maximums of about 23 degrees C on Sunday and Monday.

Bulgaria’s main Black Sea city, Varna, may be among the best bets, although there is a possibility of rain on September 4 and partly cloudy weather on Sunday and Monday, with all three days of the weekend set for forecast highs of 24 degrees C.

In Plovdiv, the focus of Unification Day celebrations – the day commemorates the end, 125 years ago, of the short-lived republic of Eastern Roumelia, which had the central Bulgarian city as its capital – the forecast is for partly cloudy weather, with highs throughout the weekend of about 24 degrees.

This year’s Unification Day celebrations in Plovdiv will be attended by President Georgi Purvanov. Events include an exhibition celebrating Plovdiv’s contribution to the unification of Bulgaria, and at 8.30pm, a speech by Purvanov and a military parade.
