The right thing for the Government to do NOW is to proceed with the peoples wish to get out of Europe in the strongest possible way. This will be seen as a sign of weakness by those idiots in Brussels and will paly that hard. Mrs May please just get on with the job in hand and do not introduce anything before this!

I read this earlier today and if true, this could be a clever move from Theresa May. She managed to expertly push Article 50 through a pro-EU Parliament, but to finished the task of leaving the EU she needs a greater majority in the Commons - which she is pretty certain to get. A General Election win would also give her a clear mandate and put a stop to much of the grumbling from pro-EU quarters. It is also a good time, as Article 50 has been triggered, so Brexit is underway, but negotiations will be slow to get started (that's the EU for you) so a pause during a GE would not affect the process. I watch with interest.

While an election would give the Conservatives a mandate for tough Brexit negotiations, it might also give Sturgeon a mandate for an early Scottish referendum. Alternatively a reduced SNP share of the vote might kill off the chaos of Sturgeon stirring the pot every five seconds. Hopefully there would be a few Conservative de-selections like Soubry.Sadly it might give Labour cause to get rid of Corbyn and install someone better.

May is very clever woman. From surviving the Home Office for 6 years, to her rise to power as PM, to her careful meandering towards hard Brexit and now this call for a GE she has played her cards well, even when the deck looks stacked against her.

Very risky if you ask me. Labour may be a trainwreck at the moment but they will be appealing to the liberal remainers. Tories should be ok though because the Lib Dems will be promising a reversal somehow which will get some decent votes but will be evenly splitting the liberal left vote. Hopefully the tories get a landslide and we can get on with what everyone has voted for.

She hopes and preys she will be released out of the brexit negotiations and someone else can clean up the mess. Wouldnt want to be in her shoes, this must be the hardest job now. No matter what you do, you will be crucified

Don't forget she doesn't make the decision all on her own, she thought about a general election over Easter and put it to her Cabinet this morning before making the announcement The Tories obviously think the time is right

A great opportunity to sweep away some of the useless politicians who have not been listening to the electorate, particularly in regards to overseas aid budget, when hospitals, schools and welfare are struggling .

Fixed-term Parliaments Act 2011, which means an election is not the PM's decision. Unless, of course, the Government is going to try to overturn that legislation or support a vote of no confidence in itself?! |

Just seen this on Facebook REALLY!!! Forgive me if I sound rude but what the heck has Ramadam got to do with voting, are they going to eat the votes?? and why would it interfer with them signing a piece of paper or however they vote. Britian is far too soft if they take this into consideration. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Well I think she is right she has taken a lot of stick for not being elected as PM,and so we will get a chance to vote of course it is Hobsons choice,as only completely mad voters will vote Labour, and the Lib Dems have shown all the courage of a wilting daisy,we are heading for Brexit and we need to silence all these doubters,as May said we need a united front,so bring the election on.
