[size=150:1ifasywr]Nigel Farage: enlargement of EU creates gateway for organised crime
Ukip leader says Britain has opened doors to countries that 'have not recovered from communism'

[size=85:1ifasywr]Nicholas Watt, chief political correspondent
theguardian.com, Sunday 4 May 2014 11.07 BST

Nigel Farage's remarks appeared to be aimed at Bulgaria and Romania, which joined the EU in 2007.

The enlargement of the EU to include former Warsaw Pact countries such as Romania has created a "
gateway for organised crime"
, the Ukip leader, Nigel Farage, has said.

As more damaging details emerged about the views of Ukip candidates, Farage admitted his party had made mistakes in its selection of candidates. He said Ukip would attempt to change perceptions this week when it published its election addresses for the local elections, featuring black and minority ethnic candidates.

Farage said the presence of Romanians in Britain posed a threat, warning of an explosion in organised crime. Expanding on his answer in a Guardian interview last month, when he spoke of how discomfiting it would be to live next door to Romanians, Farage told the Andrew Marr Show on BBC1: "
We have opened up the doors to countries that have not recovered from communism and I'm afraid it has become a gateway for organised crime. Everybody knows that. No one dares say it."

The remarks appeared to be aimed at Romania and Bulgaria, two former Warsaw Pact countries that joined the EU in 2007. A further eight former Warsaw Pact countries, led by Poland, joined the EU in 2004. Farage is concerned about immigration from the so-called A8, but his remarks appeared to be aimed at Romania and Bulgaria because they are less developed economically.

Farage insisted his party was not racist after the Sunday Times reported that a candidate in Stockport had resigned after calling Islam "
evil"
. The Ukip leader said: "
We have made mistakes. But these people are not representative of Ukip at all. Not only am I adamant that we are a non-racist party, this week we are going to fight back against it. You will see our election address for the local elections this year and you will see a lot of black ethnic minority candidates who are proudly standing for Ukip. I am going to approach this differently in future.

[size=150:1pv5jvnl]Operation takes down crime network affecting European electronic payments
Posted on 27 May 2014.

Bulgarian and French judicial and law enforcement authorities, working in close cooperation with the European Cybercrime Centre (EC3) at Europol and Eurojust in The Hague, have smashed another significant Bulgarian organized crime network suspected of a variety of crimes including electronic payment and document fraud, currency counterfeiting and drugs trafficking.

The action day for Operation Echo on 20 May 2014 resulted in 11 arrests (4 European Arrest Warrants (EAWs)) and 29 house searches in Bulgaria.

The operation was led by Bulgarian authorities via a command coordination centre in Silistra. Europol EC3 experts were present with a mobile office, allowing direct access to Europol's databases for cross-checking, analyzing and exchanging intelligence in real time. EC3 officers also provided tailor-made expertise on the spot.

Three complex production sites of skimming equipment were discovered and dismantled in Varna during the raids, where quantities of micro camera bars, card readers, pieces of electronics and plastic cards ready to be encoded were seized.

Complete equipment to produce counterfeit bank cards was also seized, which included magnetic strip readers and writers, computers, phones and flash drives. Police officers also confiscated dozens of forged payment cards with records of PIN numbers, ready to be used at other ATMs. All raids and arrests took place simultaneously and were coordinated from the command center set up in Silistra Regional SANS1 headquarters.

The primary modus operandi of the criminals and their associates was to harvest financial data from ATMs in different areas of France (e.g. Nancy, Metz, and Lyon) as well as other EU countries, which they then used to create fake payment cards. The fake cards could then be used to withdraw large amounts of cash from ATMs outside the European Union (e.g. in the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia).

"
Crime is conducted more and more online and its character is increasingly transnational. This operation against payment fraud shows the international scale of organized crime, which affects citizens, businesses and our collective security. It also shows the effective and ever increasing cooperation among the international law enforcement community and their effective response to the evolving threats of organised crime"
, said Europol's Director Rob Wainwright

Bulgaria’s Deputy Prosecutor-General Borislava Sarafov, speaking after attending a meeting at the Interior Ministry that was attended by Prime Minister Borissov and Interior Minister Vesselin Vuchkov, said that the Varna gang was headed by Radoslav “Black Rory” Kaltchev.

Kaltchev had left Bulgaria on January 11, it had been established from video surveillance. A European Arrest Warrant had not yet been issued because technical procedures were pending. "
