Went to market this week and bought a small stove so that I can set chutney and jam to boil outside instead of stinking/heating the house. The bottle comes empty and Jordan gave up trying to explain how to get it filled. Can anyone help? I presume they are filled rather than swapped, but have no idea. Are they camping stoves?

This is not as easy as it used to be here in Bulgaria. Following some bad blasts due to overfilling, new laws were introduced so garages and gas filling outlets were closed. Now I believe you have to swop bottles empty for full. Okay except I have found this is not universally available now and I am not sure if this would apply to camping stoves which are good for what you want to do outside. We get local people to take our bottle (large) who seem to know how to do it and where. I think it is probably done illegally by the garage still but only in the evening when the çontrol' are unlikely to visit.' On asking ourselves at our nearest petrol station if they swopped bottles the answer was no. I have heard there is a garage near VT but not sure where and without a car and relying on the goodwill of locals its all become a bit difficult.

I would be very interested to know if anyone can answer your query more positively. I use our gas rings in the summer kitchen a lot or when there is a power cut and we haven't lit the woodburner.

although it is law now that they should be swapped , there is a gas garage by us that will fill ..large ones or camping ones....
so they are around

I get my gas bottles filled, not swopped. yes there were some incidents which saw a change in the law. only garages with an independent self contained area away from the petrol pumps are authorised to fill bottles legally.

Most garages which swop bottles will have a cage out near the forecourt containing the gas bottles and are easy to spot. Be very careful about checking the expiry date stamped on the bottle you are getting..they will usually give you the oldest one, which can make it very hard to exchange next time. I now use a 'filling station' a couple of miles down the road, but as has been said, I have to go after 6pm.

Same here we get ours filled without any probs but only in certain garages now.

Most garages fill these. I have 4 bottles 3 for short term heating and one for cooking when the leccy goes off. Never had a problem filling them even when the panic was on. If the garage does gas for cars they should fill gas bottles as well

Not all garages will fill cylinders some will only do cars.

Exactly right Andy..there are two garages in the next village, one filling cars with gas, but not bottles..the other does bottle exchange, auto gas etc, but won't fill a bottle for you. I have to go past both of them to get to the 'sneaky' one.

And the tomatoes in our garden which they have been nurturing, they are heavy with fruit and they are for us....all fifty plants!

we refil our gas bottles here too. there must be a place for you to fill yours.
As for those tomatoes peppers cucumbers etc they have only just started be ready for the avalanch!!!!

My lovely mother-in-law arrived on the bus this morning and she and Mrs Bazz have been busy pickling sweet gherkins all day. Tomorrow is the time for preserving cherries, apricots (not mine), peaches and nectarines..my old mate next door has been over with 7kgs of his honey (extracted this morning) and the promise of 10kgs still to come. We are due to lift the potatoes in the next couple of days and that will give us around 200 kgs..the walnut tree is holding about a half a ton of nuts, so will have some to give away/swop this year. In addition to this we still have the pumpkins, onions, garlic, peppers and tomatoes to get in and process. The cellar is starting to look healthy again.

Before I get slammed for going 'off topic', just let me say that we couldn't really do all this in a short time without a reliable source of gas.
