Importing Pets - Cargo or Cabin? Empty
PostSubject: Importing Pets - Cargo or Cabin?   Importing Pets - Cargo or Cabin? Icon_minitimeThu May 30, 2013 2:54 pm

I have managed to find all the requirements for bringing pets in to BG from a Non-EU country but whilst several airlines flying from here allow pets to be carried in the cabin, I cannot find whether BG allows this or whether it requires pets to travel cargo.

I don't suppose anyone knows?

Thank you.

We brought ours from Turkey which is a non country. I don't believe it makes any difference whether they are in the hold or in the cabin, but the necessary export papers have to be in order and there will be a lot of photocopying of docments and signing by your goodself to comply with their regulations before they are allowed to enter BG. Once here you can get an EU passport for any pet from your local veterinary surgeon for about 10 Leva.

when we asked about ours flying we were told it depended on the size of dog and how many seats were empty as weather the dogs went in the cabin or the hold. This was from England of course how it works from China i am sorry i have no idea.
We drove our dogs over so we never did find out in the end.
However once here the vet can do a passport and injections etc it is a good and cheap service. The vets we have used are great. It may be worth asking the vet in China if he can do all the rabies jabs etc he may be able to do the passport because dogs are taken to London krufts these days from all over the world and they would have to have a passport to enter England.
All animals not just dogs can have passports and birds too. Our friend has a passport for her parrot and cat and dogs.

Oh all the jabs/certs/chip etc are not a problem at all and all the vets here are either Aussies or Brits. The issue is that countries have different policies about how animals are allowed in - some will only allow the animal to arrive as cargo (not the same as checking it into the hold when you fly) which means you need to use a freight forwarder in order to gain clearance. I just imported a pet from the EU to here and whilst the airline the animal flew on permitted animals to travel in the cabin or be checked into the hold as additional baggage, country regulation didn't permit the animal to arrive that way. The difference meant instead of paying around 40 Euro we had to pay just shy of 2,500 Euro!

Maybe I'll contact one of the airlines and see what's what.

Thanks :)

Good idea Expatinchina - I'm afraid that sometimes people don't really read the question asked and consequently give the wrong answer. Good luck with your search from an airline which flies to Bulgaria from China.
