Is it possible to buy syrup anywhere in the VT area? I like to do a bit of baking and use the stuff sometimes.
I haven't seen it in any of the usual shops. Runny honey is not quite the same!
If anyone can advise me on the Bulgarian word for syrup that would be helpful too.
Thanks in advance! T

That's really one of the things I miss living here in Turkey. A good Syrup Sponge Pudding, oh . . . the thought of it has my taste buds running like mad!!

Never mind, back to the rice pudding, not quite so good, but really nice.

We too love treacle sponge and custard. It is one of the things I ask visitors to bring over with them. We are near Yambol and there is an English food shop in Yambol centre who stock it. I believe they do deliver throughout Bulgaria - but of course that will make it an expensive purchas

I have not found a Bulgarian equivalent - so I think an English food supplier is going to be your best bet. Or get someone to post you some out!!!! Syrup in Bulgarian is the same as in English. The link is for google dictionary - I use it no end, especially for the names of cooking ingredients.

You can make it by heating strong sugar solution, with a small amount of acid, mix 1g per kg of sugar used, the usual thing to add is cream of tartar, but you can use citric acid or if you cant get either the juice of a lemon, i cook it for about 5 minutes ( look at the colour , you can do it by temperature with a sugar thermomiter ) , cook it too long and you get hard clear boiled sweets base

Thanks for the replies. I was in Metro the other day, and saw "
diet syrup"
in the diabetic section.
Is this not an oxymoron? Looked like golden syrup, but didn't buy it, goodness knows what's in it! [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Hi Flower hope you are well and life is good. I bought this in Tesco other day in error as I meant to pick up the Maple Syrup, but realised when I got home I had Golden - so will bring it over for you in Sept and when you come to the Garden Party 1st Oct you can have your treat, but don't let everyone else know, as they will want some Golden Syrup! 2381841692 Golden Syrup! 2381841692 Berni xxx

You are very welcome Barbs, we will sort something out g

Just thought I would share this info with you all - I had a tin of golden syrup in the cupboard for probably about a year. I had opened it and used a little then put the lid on securely again and put back in the cupboard. Then a receipt called for golden syrup, I took it out and started to lift the lid when the whole thing just exploded Golden Syrup! 3135333095 Took me ages to clean the ruddy stuff off everything. So be very careful when opening tins you have used.

Oddy
