Night rafting along Struma River? Why not!

Rafting along the Struma River has recently turned into a real obsession for adventurous people. Both experienced rowers and total amateurs rush into the Kresna Gorge at the end of the week in order to test their strength and will. Organizers claim that the number of enthusiasts is constantly increasing. Only in June over 400 fans practised rafting along the Struma River in the region of the town of Kresna. Now the local authorities have the ambition to construct a night rafting route that will be the first of its kind in Bulgaria.

An unconventional attraction is offered only 130 km to the South of capital Sofia. One can jump into an inflatable dinghy, go down the frothy rapids, overcoming a series of obstacles and finally get out of the waters safe and sound. Sometimes the feeling is as if someone has put you into a washing machine, experienced people say. The feeling of helplessness and vulnerability is quite the same. However, the thrill of overcoming the difficulties is incredible! The best periods for rafting along the Struma River are spring and the beginning of summer, when snow melts down from the closest mountain of Pirin. Local clubs organize rafting for amateurs then. There is a certain kind of risk in this sport and that is why security comes first. The enthusiasts are instructed by experts and receive helmets, life jackets and neoprene costumes. Then groups of 6 to 8 people sit in the boat and start their adventure along the fast waters of the river. It’s worth living through that, but what can make you dive into the water at night? It turns out that there are many candidates for night rafting. The first experiment of this kind took place during last spring and was really successful. Now the Kresna municipality is working on a project for the construction of a 600 m route for night rafting.

“There is a suitable route along the Struma River near the town of Kresna and it will be illuminated for the purpose – Mayor of Kresna Ilian Krastev explains. – We are working now on the technical project for applying for funding under an operational program for development of rural areas. The building of a rafting centre is provided with boat and equipment store. Special small quays will be constructed along the river banks, as well as stations in the beginning and at the end of the routes.”

According to well-informed people the conditions for night rafting near Kresna are very good. A revetment has already been built up on the riverbank. Lights will be installed on top of it. Thus brave people will rely not only to the moonlight and the stars while trying to find their way down along the river. However, risk stays and it is quite more serious during the night, but the emotion is worth it. The inhabitants of the small municipality really count on rafting in order more tourists to be attracted in the Kresna Gorge, which is a unique natural phenomenon by itself. Camps of tents and local rafting clubs can be found along the riverbanks. One can spend a few days there, enjoying the water sports. There are several eco paths around that reveal the secrets of Pirin. Mountain bikes are rented, as well as the ATVs for extreme marches among nature that have become so popular recently.
