Danube River water levels continue to cause concern
There is no immediate danger of the Danube River bursting and flooding regions in northern Bulgaria, the Citizens Protection service told the private television channel bTV. Authorities said that the water levels are being surveyed constantly and pre-emptive measures have been taken.
Near Silistra in the northeast, the water level is at 681cm, the Bulgarian news agency BTA said. According to the chief secretary of the Silistra municipality, there is no reason for alarm, as the "
critical level"
for Silistra is 785cm.
The water levels of the Danube River in the Rousse region were also rising and authorities there are also on full alert over fears it could burst its banks, with levels at about 680cm.
Plamen Stoyanov, municipal administrator in the Rousse region, has warned residents nearby to take all necessary precautions against a possible flood. An emergency task force, which would be on constant alert, "
surveying the water level of the Danube and all tributaries"
, has also been set up, the report said.
According to Stoyanov, the authorities will be surveying areas such as Ryahovo and will manage the levies installed. Rousse, for the time being, is safe because a spillage only occurs if water levels exceed eight metres.
