Prince Charles has announced the engagement of Prince William to Kate, congratulations to them both.

Prince William is to marry Kate Middleton in 2011.

The Prince, who is second in line to the throne, will wed his long-term girlfriend in the spring or summer of next year.

The pair, who are both 28, became engaged last month during a holiday in Kenya.

They began dating eight years ago while studying at St Andrews University in Fife, where they shared a house.

The engagement was announced by Clarence House.

The statement said: "
The Prince of Wales is delighted to announce the engagement of Prince William to Miss Catherine Middleton.

"
The wedding will take place in the spring or summer of 2011, in London. Further details about the wedding day will be announced in due course.

"
Prince William has informed The Queen and other close members of his family.

"
Prince William has also sought the permission of Miss Middleton's father.

"
Following the marriage, the couple will live in north Wales, where Prince William will continue to serve with the Royal Air Force."

The Queen said she was "
absolutely delighted"
for both Prince William and Kate Middleton.

Prime Minister David Cameron believed the engagement marked "
a great day for our country"
.

He said he had received the news in a call from Buckingham Palace during a cabinet meeting, and it was greeted with "
a great cheer"
and "
banging of the table"
from fellow ministers.

Labour leader Ed Miliband said "
the whole country will be wishing them every happiness."


Scotland's First Minister Alex Salmond said William and Kate's romance was "
a match made in St Andrews"
. He added that everyone in Scotland would join him in wishing them well.
Long relationship

Kate Middleton is the eldest child of businessman Michael Middleton and former air hostess Carol. She was raised in a five-bedroom detached house in the Berkshire village of Bucklebury. Her family, who are self-made millionaires, run a mail order toy and party goods firm.

Both William and Kate graduated in the same ceremony from St Andrews in 2005. Their families joined them for a celebratory lunch.

The couple's long relationship became public in 2005 when they were photographed together on the Swiss ski slopes of Klosters. They split briefly in 2007.

If the pair get married in the summer of 2011, the ceremony will fall close to the 30th anniversary of the wedding of his father, Prince Charles, to the late Diana, Princess of Wales.

I think its marvelous that William gave her his mothers ring she would be so proud of him

I watched to interview on the tv earlier tonight and what a lovely couple they make and I think Kate will make a wonderful queen and William will definatley make a better King than his dad and the less said about Charlie's dragon the better

I watched this interview and it was real nice I think William is so much like his Mum and I do think he also has her values, I'm looking forward to this wedding and lets hope this one is a fairy-tail wedding

Kenya is a beautiful place to propose. I am born and brought up in Kenya and it surely is a beautiful and great country - aprt from its security and political situation.

According to British newspaper, The Sun, it all went down at a remote log cabin near Lake Rutundu in Kenya.

This surely is a wonderful place.

Can the UK afford a Royal wedding?

We have bailed out the Banks, the Irish etc etc.

In recession and now we have to foot the bill for this as well. No good saying the Royals are paying for this and that. We are paying through this dozy government. Good luck to them but we (the family) paid for our wedding no one else gave us a penny. I think the Royals should foot all the bill.
