I am booked into the Hotel Budapest in Sofia which is supposed to be near the bus/train station. It has had good reviews and I wondered if anyone on the forum has used it. Is it easy walking distance from the bus station as I will be travelling hand baggage and don't mind a short walk, but need to know which direction to take? I'm only booked for one night before flying to UK so I doubt I will be walking around town!

oldun ... the bus will drop you 'behind' the station. You need to walk in through the main doors at the back of the station, right through and out the main doors at the front of the station (where the taxis will be).

Walk pass the taxis and you will emerge at the far end of Marie Louiza Blvd (I've put a blob on sallyann's map where you'll eventually come out of the station!).

Take a walk down Marie Louiza and hang a left at Kozloduy Street and your hotel is a couple of blocks up there. Should take you around five to ten minutes depending how fast you walk!

That's brilliant and thanks to you both. I have been in that area many times wandering around so I know a bit but never walked far off Maria Luisa street. Its so easy to get lost! I'm sure I won't need a taxi. Thanks again folks for such a quick and valued reply. This hotel has very good reviews on Booking.com so I will report back on my own findings. I have stayed in several other hotels and all have been okay, but liked the fact that this one was so near the bus station without having to worry about taxis. Having said that, I use the taxi kiosk inside the bus station and the man there always escorts me to the taxis and gets me into one, which might be a tip for others because there are still some pirate ones around.

I can thoroughly recommend this hotel. Fantastic breakfast . Although its buffet style there is a full English as well as all the Continental fruit, ham, cereals etc etc. Look for the hotplates which I almost missed. There was even fried bread. Staff friendly too. Use Booking.com because its loads cheaper than the advertised off-street price. I found it easily thanks to the maps from Sally-Ann and Chris. The street its on, leaves something to be desired - a bit rundown, but walking distance to the busy shopping area and I can recommend a big 'sweets' restaurant next to Kentucky fried chicken. Fabulous puds, nice coffee and some good-looking savouries too.
