(road tax) in Bulgaria is set to increase next year, announced Rosen Plevneliev, Minister of Regional Development.

The price of vignettes has not changed for the past two years. The most popular are annual vignettes, which cost BGN 67. In 2008, the revenues collected totaled BGN 217 M. In January this year BGN 103 M were collected, according to the Road Agency.

In October 2009, the recently sacked director of the Road Agency, Yanko Yankov, had announced that the price of stickers would not be increased in 2010.

The National Road Infrastructure Agency stated that there is still no decision on how much new stickers will cost, nor whether this hike will apply to all categories of vignette.

Three ministries those of Regional Development, Transport and Finance are meeting Monday night to discuss the matter.

Plevneliev told the Bulgarian National Television there were several variants to be discussed. The final option will be announced Wednesday, when the budget is to be put before the Council of Ministers

The price increase should be applied only to one-year vignettes, in the opinion of the Minister of Regional Development.

The Ministry of Transport prefers not to offer an opinion, because they have not yet received the analysis of the Road Agency, said Minister Alexander Tsvetkov.

The Ministry of Finance commented that they are still analysing whether all types of vignettes are to go up and by how much, or whether the rise should be limited to certain categories only.

Currently, a tender is open for the selection of vignette distributors;
the project is worth BGN 40 M, over a period of 4 years, and the deadline for presentation of offers is November 2.

At the moment, the stickers are being distributed only by DZI Trans and Bulgarian Posts. The intention of the tender is to provide for more distributors of the vignettes, said Minister Plevneliev.

Drivers in Bulgaria can buy their toll stickers – the so-called vignettes - for 2012, preferably those valid for the whole year as they are the best deal.

The current cost of an annual vignette for a car is BGN 67, a price that has remained unchanged since 2007.

The price for a monthly toll sticker is set at BGN 25.

The stickers can be bought in the Petrol, Lukoil, Shell, OMV, ECO Bulgaria, Litex, Rompetrol, in the Piccadilly stores, in Easypay's offices and 1870 Bulgarian Posts' stations, as well as on the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] website.

A vignette is required for driving on Bulgarian state roads. These are practically all main roads in Bulgaria and there is no option to avoid buying a vignette for driving across Bulgaria.

Bulgaria's road vignettes are not likely to be replaced by electronic toll systems before 2017.

2011 vignettes will remain valid until the end of January 2012

Road vignettes bought for motor vehicles in 2011 will remain valid until the end of January 2012, Bulgaria’s Road Infrastructure Agency said.

For the third consecutive year, the 2012 prices for vignettes will remain unchanged, the agency said.

The prices will be 10 leva for a vignette valid for a week, 25 leva for a monthly vignette and 67 leva for an annual one, for light vehicles, officially known as category 3 vehicles. The prices for categories 1 and 2 also are unchanged.

The prices of vignettes for foreign-registration vehicles also remain unchanged, the agency said.

The new vignettes will include additional security measures, making it possible for police to detect counterfeit stickers.

The new stickers are to be sold at 3450 sales points, including fuel stations. Vignettes may be bought online at vinetka.com, for which there is a small delivery fee.

You will find that Vignettes are available at all border crossing points. We bought ours at the first OMV we came across when we landed from the UK at Sofia. Easy pessy.

Don't forget people that 2011 vignettes will are valid until the end of January 2012 I know that some people have already bought their new one because they didn't know.

How to buy a vignette in Bulgaria

When you buy a vignette it should be activated for the days you will need it. A vignette is being activated by a” punch system” and when you buy one you will be asked about the day it should be valid from. The weekly vignette is valid for seven calendar days from the day it has been activated from. A monthly vignette is valid for 31 calender days - for example if you buy a monthly vignette on 15 of July it will be valid till 15th of August. Things are different with the annual vignette. It is valid for the calender year only - this means that if you buy one annual vignette in October it will be valid until end of December only (annual vignettes are valid now until 31. January, but this might change in the future). The day on which the vignette sticker is purchased must not always be the day of the start of its validity. The vignette can be purchased in advance of the desire of the customer. The important thing is that the actual date of its start of validity will be punched.

The vignette sticker

A vignette sticker is only valid once it has been properly affixed to the vehicle. The mere purchase or possession of a toll sticker does NOT satisfy the requirements for proper payment of the toll. After removing the foil backing, the vignette sticker must be placed without damage directly onto the inside of the windscreen in a location (down right when facing the screen) which is clearly visible from outside the vehicle, where it can be inspected. Short-term toll stickers (1-week and 7-day stickers) must be punched prior to being affixed. Vignette stickers which are not punched or which are not affixed to the vehicle are invalid and one must expect penalties in the event of an inspection. The lower part of the vignette sticker (counterfoil with the serial number) must be retained as a proof of purchase.

The stickers can be bought in almost all gas stations in the country, except Petrol and Rompetrol. They will be on sale also at Easypay's offices and 1870 Bulgarian Posts' stations.

Saw on Bulgarian TV news that the police have uncovered a stash of counterfeit vignettes if I understood correctly. Par for the course naturally!

MY 18 year came home last evening and told us about a well dressed man in BMW parked around the corner selling dodgy vignettes, insurance stickers, MOT stickers and DRIVERS LICENCES for 25 leva each!!!!

Apparently the queue was a 100 yards long. True story.

actually , that really suprises me...that the queue was not much longer !!
