Looks like its going to cost even more to Tax your car next year
The price of " vignettes" (road tax) in Bulgaria is set to increase next year, announced Rosen Plevneliev, Minister of Regional Development.
The price of vignettes has not changed for the past two years. The most popular are annual vignettes, which cost BGN 67. In 2008, the revenues collected totaled BGN 217 M. In January this year BGN 103 M were collected, according to the Road Agency.
In October 2009, the recently sacked director of the Road Agency, Yanko Yankov, had announced that the price of stickers would not be increased in 2010.
The National Road Infrastructure Agency stated that there is still no decision on how much new stickers will cost, nor whether this hike will apply to all categories of vignette.
Three ministries those of Regional Development, Transport and Finance are meeting Monday night to discuss the matter.
Plevneliev told the Bulgarian National Television there were several variants to be discussed. The final option will be announced Wednesday, when the budget is to be put before the Council of Ministers
The price increase should be applied only to one-year vignettes, in the opinion of the Minister of Regional Development.
The Ministry of Transport prefers not to offer an opinion, because they have not yet received the analysis of the Road Agency, said Minister Alexander Tsvetkov.
The Ministry of Finance commented that they are still analysing whether all types of vignettes are to go up and by how much, or whether the rise should be limited to certain categories only.
Currently, a tender is open for the selection of vignette distributors; the project is worth BGN 40 M, over a period of 4 years, and the deadline for presentation of offers is November 2.
At the moment, the stickers are being distributed only by DZI Trans and Bulgarian Posts. The intention of the tender is to provide for more distributors of the vignettes, said Minister Plevneliev. |

| Actually, come to think of it, Hungary wasn't too bad as far as roads were concerned. Just last time I did it, the wife wanted to drive around Lake Balaton as her Father was born in that area.
Stupid idea ... 42 degrees, us two and the dog in the four wheel drive (but no mineral water!) and average speed of about 5 kmh due to the tourists!
Never again.
I agree about Romania ... some of those roads are scary. I always start looking for a motel / hotel an hour before sundown! |

- The Austria one is by far the best value.
You have lovely condition motorway to cross the entire country. This can be done in a matter of hours.
The surfaces are fine but when I was driving in Austria in late September last year the traffic was horrendous, like a cross country version of the M25. I tried getting off the motorway but then I was on single track roads, lovely scenery but hopelessly slow. I had thought I might carry on to Bulgaria on that trip but couldn't face the extra miles and extra jams. |

| Funnily enough, we hit it on a National Bank Holiday ... the motorways were deserted! |

All joking aside, the Police are cracking down on windscreens obscured by out-of-date stickers [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]20 lev fine if your stickers are out of date. The best way I've found to get them off: Green insurance stickers have a peelable clear plastic backing, peel that off, scrape the rest of the sticker with a Stanley knife blade, then wipe the glue off with a sponge dampened with petrol/lighter fluid. Vignette stickers scrape them off carefully with a Stanley knife blade, then wipe the glue off as above. MOT Stickers Pick at a corner with a fingernail, then slowly peel off the sticker. It will leave a chequered pattern, which will wipe off as above. just make sure you're scraping the right stickers off |

| [size=55:fbn0tpsc]novinite No Change in Bulgarian Toll Stickers Price for 2012There will be no hikes in the price of Bulgaria's annual vignettes (toll stickers) next year, authorities have announced much to the relief of drivers. The current cost of an annual vignette for a car is BGN 67, a price unchanged since 2007. The stickers can be bought in the Petrol, Lukoil, Shell, OMV, ECO Bulgaria, Litex, Rompetrol, in the Piccadilly stores, in Easypay's offices and 1870 Bulgarian Posts' stations, as well as on the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] website. A vignette is required for driving on Bulgarian state roads. These are practically all main roads in Bulgaria and there is no option to avoid buying a vignette for driving across Bulgaria. Bulgaria's road vignettes are expected to be replaced with electronic toll systems by 2014. |

| [size=55:s20d7g7c]dariknews.bg Bulgaria to Keep Its Road Vignettes until 2017Bulgaria will not fully implement electronic toll systems for its roads before 2017, Bulgarian Road Infrastructure Agency Chairman Lazar Lazarov has predicted. The electronic toll systems will replace Bulgaria's existing road vignettes (stickers). The Bulgarian Transport Ministry has to choose a consultant who should decide what the right type of toll systems is the most appropriate, Lazarov has explained, revealing that a GPS-based toll system is the most likely choice. The devices will constantly send signals for the distance travelled by the vehicle and the taxes will be paid at the end of the month or at the end of the year. In two years, electronic toll systems are expected to be implemented for cargo vehicles passing through the country. Local cargo traffic is the next to be covered by the new electronic toll system. A vignette is currently required for driving on Bulgarian state roads. These are practically all main roads in Bulgaria and there is no option to avoid buying a vignette for driving across Bulgaria.
