OK another lesson learned.  I used wall paper paste to stick on polystyrene sheets to the wall, big mistake....

As you know we pasted on some polystyrene on the wall to insulate the room but now we need to finish off so we have to get some of the grip plastic things and drill into the wall to hold the polystyrene on.  Well some of it was loose so we took it off only to find patches of mildew, in some areas, I can only assume this was because we used paste and it had not dried properly.  It is only in a few spots mostly where it did not adhere to the wall.  So had to take off where it had not stuck and brush it to clean it now will stick silicon on the 4 corners and a bit in the middle so the air can get though and dry that.  The hall way is fine that was all put on with silicon and stuck fast I don't think there is any need for these plastic grip things.  

Our Bulgarian friend the builder came down to advise us how to cover the polystyrene said we need to drill the plastic plugs in then put netting on and plaster.  I don't think we need to do this as the polystyrene is securely adhered to the wall in the hallway.  I would want a flat clear surface not a stippling effect wall,.   I pointed out it was well stuck to the wall but he said this is how it is done.  I guess this is the only way the builder knows of finishing off and will not even consider thinking outside the box.

Actually I am wondering now if it is a good idea to do the wallpaper in stages so it has time to dry out.  The wallpaper will be pasted onto the polystyrene sheeted walls.  What do you think?

Just a note: Back in the 70ies we did something simular with polystyrene rolls. We bought polystyrene on a roll and pasted that onto the walls then covered that with the new kind of stretchy wallpaper. it was basically the same as we are doing here, only we are using a thicker polystyrene. It was all the go at the time but boy was it hard to strip off a few years later...

Regarding pasting the wallpaper to the poly...why not test the method on a spare bit of the poly and stand it in the corner for a week or so and see if it works.

Good idea but we are talking about Dougie here, he has no patients what so ever. I have been outside painting the bottom half of the villa and I could here him f'in and blinging He has put on 3 strips on the landing/stairs and it seems to be sticking well almost dry already. The lining paper we brought from the UK some years ago it is actually very good quality lining paper.

Good idea I bought some foil backed stuff from the uk years ago and it was/is amazing the difference it makes. Good luck

 Stig and well done to you too! The lining paper has stuck well and yes, the villa is so much warmer now  since we put that up.  

We also did the ceilings as we had a wood roof and nothing about that apart from reeds, When we came back to BG the upstairs was like a graveyard with so many dead insects.  We removed the reeds from the roof but could not insulate the roof becasue of it's silly shape, so we did it all from the inside of the villa.

I am over at the eco build in London soon and I will let you all know if their is any products that will help solve all our problems out, I did see plasterboard with polystyrene on at home max in November so some bits are available in BG it would be really nice if we could buy straight dry wood that is 4.8m or 2.4m lengths so we can get an 8ft wall, but that's my problem any way best of luck with your walls

Here is an update on the walls. Well after a week or soon the wall stuck fast apart from the edges down the side so we went to town bought the plastic pegs, drilled the walls and put them in here there and everywhere then put the lining paper on and so far all is well. Will put a lightweight walpaper on as if we paint the lining it might be too heavy. I am not keen on painting over wallpaper in any case. Will post a photo when finished. But I think we have finally mastered it and the villa is nice and warm.

Good luck with the 4.8m lengths Paddy...you will probably have to place a special order for what you require, simply because most of the logs coming out of the forest are cut at about the 4.2 length to allow for end trimming in the mill. Over the years, I've purchased and used a huge amount of building quality timber here in BG and most of it has been in 4m lengths...when constructing my garage, I needed 5m beams, cut to 8"x 8" and had to place an order...cost was almost double what the 4m lengths were at the time.

By huge amounts, as mentioned above, I mean something like 200 lengths of 4"x 2", 100 lengths of 4"x 4", plus the 5m stuff. Also needed were more than 250 lengths of 8" x 1" boards, some PAR, most just rough sawn.

Sounds like you would be wise to bring them from the UK [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].  We have found the wood here is not very good it is all worped or full of knots.  When we buy the wood the outside look ok but when you break the bale the wood is no good.  I told them at the shop about this but he just shrugged his shoulders and said manafacture problem.  The next lot of wood we bought I asked them to cut it open and again several peices were no good but the chap changed them, even though he was not happy about it.  

I watched the bulgarian's buying materials they check every single item before it goes on their van and if there is anything al all wrong with the product they will ask for another so no we do as they do.  We live and learn.

I have a little project I am considering for much later in the year  Dougie is moaning I have too much craft stuff laying about so I thought why not build a little wooden work shed so i can work in there and store everything too.  We would used tun and gruve but again it is not so good here can you buy here the packets of lengths like we buy in the UK.

I'm pretty lucky...my local supplier is well aware of how fussy I am and won't sell me rubbish material. I usually phone him a few days beforehand and he lets me know what he has and how good it is. Also lucky to have a wood kiln not too far away and seasoned timber is easy to get...at a price!
