Bulgaria Railway Workers Suspend Strike after Wages Pledge

Around 60 Bulgarian State Railways (BDZ) workers have called off a strike at the central train station in Sofia after it was announced that their wages would be paid Tuesday.

BDZ Executive Director, Pencho Popov, announced that after receiving the monthly subsidy from the Finance Ministry all wages would be paid on Tuesday.

The workers thus suspended their strike but made it clear that they remain on standby for a new protest if the wages are not forthcoming. BDZ earlier reported that the ‘marshalling teams’ who came on for the night shift late Sunday went on a spontaneous strike which was not organized by the trade unions.

The Finance Ministry reported that the January BGN 13,3 M railways subsidy had been paid on time , as is scheduled in the agreement with BDZ.
