Drivers in Bulgaria with Lights On Day and Night Year-Round

Drivers on Bulgarian roads will be required to have their lights on during the day too for the duration of the whole year, not just the winter months, parliament decided on Friday.

Until now lights had to be kept on during the day only from November 1 to March 1.

At the beginning of November every year the traffic police used to start the so-called "
lights on"
road checks, issuing tickets to drivers who forgot to turn their lights on and/or chose to ignore the legal amendments, adopted in the summer of 2006.

There was a courtesy period, however, with just warnings given during the first 8 days of the check, which lasted until November 21.

During this period traffic police was also on high alert for drivers with malfunctioning wind-shield wipers blades and worn-out tires.

Do we know when this is effective from?

Good question Chris, I will try and find out from my friend who knows a policeman.

How can it save lots of accidents?? Sorry but if its sunny and blue sky's in the day and you need your lights on to see, well you shouldn't be on the road. If it is foggy or heavy rains or nite time yes fair enough lights on. When the sun is blazing at 35 degree you can not see the lights half the time anyway due to reflections. The Bulgarian law is an ass just like most of the country's ;
)

Drivers on Bulgarian roads will be required to have their lights on during the day too as of next week.

The new legislation, which obliges drivers to have their lights on day and night year-round, will come into force after it is promulgated in the State Gazette, which is scheduled for next week,"
Boyko Ranovski, head of Traffic Police department, told Darik radio.

Drivers who do not stick to the rule face fines of BGN 50.

The new rule has triggered a wave of protests in Internet forums in Bulgaria, which are overflowing with messages of condemnation.

Drivers believe the new legislation seeks to bring more fines to the budget, force them to buy more petrol and equip the local police with a nice new tool for racketeering.

More bonuses for the Bulgarian police then .

Just makes the job of scamming drivers a bit easier for them..they can see their 'gift money' coming from a greater distance.

When we lived in Sofia, we had an excellent Office Manager, Georgi (Bulgarian of course), and he told us a tale over lunch one day about the Police having 'special wallets' that could hide cash notes behind the badge! He said that he's seen the traffic cops meeting in a bar on Friday afternoon and all 'tipping out' their 'tips' onto the table, sharing them up and buying the Rakia.

Don't know if it's true or not, but sounds plausible.

I heard the same story a few years ago, so it may well be true. It seems to be a fairly popular industry over here. I make it a habit to keep only a few small denomination notes in my wallet..and I always drive with my lights on.

If people know that you must have your lights on and obey the law then there are no problems. Its no use saying we are Brits and it doesn't apply to us , it does, so the sooner people do it the better off they will be
