9517 Bulgarians Gave Up on Bulgaria in 2011 - Official Data

In 2011, a total of 9517 people declared a change of their current address in Bulgaria with an address abroad, according to data of the National Statistical Institute (NSI).

53.1% of the emigrants were female and 46.9% male.

Nearly 54% of those who left Bulgaria were 20-39 years of age.

The youngest emigrants (under 20 years of age) accounted for 12.5% of the total, while those aged 60+ were 5.8%.

The number of people who changed their foreign address registration to an address registration in Bulgaria was 4772 – 50.9% male and 49.1% female.

39.6% of the immigrants were 20 - 39 years of age, 27.1% were 40 - 59 years old, immigrants under 20 years of age were 21.5% and those aged 60+ were 11.8%.

Meanwhile, 90 646 people changed their address registration within the country in 2011.

The share of migrants from one to another city is the highest, at 40.9%, while the city-to-village migration amounted to 21.1%

Village-to-city migrants were 29.1%, while village-to-village migrations amounted to a mere 8.9%.

The number of marriages continued to drop in 2011, with a total of civil 21 448 marriages registered for the year, 2838 less than the year ago.

According to NSI, the decrease can be attributed to the growing popularity of de-facto unions.

At the same time, the number of divorces declined by 431 from 2010.

The highest number of divorces was by mutual consent (67.4%), followed by divorce due to incompatibility of character (22.9%), virtual parting (6.0%) and lack of care for the family (2.2%).

Reasons for divorce like infidelity, physical and mental cruelty, habitual use of alcohol and drugs and marriages sealed in haste account for less than 1.0% of the total.

The ageing of the population continued in 2011, which was made most obvious by the decrease of children of less than 15 years of age and the increase in people aged 65+.

By 31.12.2011 the age dependency ratio, the ratio between people under 15 and people aged 65+ per 100 persons aged 15-64, was 47.5%.

The dependency ratio in 2005 and 2010 was 44.5 and 46.0%, respectively.

Most unfavorable dependency ratio was in the districts of Vidin (61.0%), Lovech (58.6%) and Montana (58.1%).

The most favorable dependency ratio was registered in Sofia (39.8%) and Smolyan (42.3%).

The ageing of the population led to an increase in the mean age from 40.4 years in 2001 to 41.2 years in 2005 and 42.7 years at the end of 2011.

In rural areas the mean age was higher by 4.3 years than in urban areas.

In 2011, the working-age population (aged 16-60 for women and 16-63 for men) was 4.523 M, or 61.7% of the total population.

24% of the people were over working age and 14.3% were below working age.

In 2011, the number of live born children was 71 402, down by 4667 from 2010.

The highest fertility rates were witnessed in the districts of Sliven, Sofia, Varna and Targovishte, while the lowest fertility levels were registered in Vidin and Smolyan.

The 2011 crude birth rate in Bulgaria was about the same as in Greece, Romania, Malta, Portugal and Austria.

In 2011, as a result of the negative natural increase rate, Bulgaria's population decreased by 37 412 people.

This is very sad to think that these people have been driven out of their own country by their own governments inability to get things right for their own people.
