Bulgarians to Pay TV Tax
Every working Bulgarian will support the national radio and television with 60 levs a year
At the height of the economic crisis in the poorest EU member state, it now appears that a new tax is hanging over the heads of the Bulgarians like a Sward of Damocles. Some wise heads in the Plenary Hall are thinking to propose a tax that should be levied on working Bulgarian citizens who watch TV or listen to the radio. The collected funds, they say, will be used to support the national television and radio. Assoc. Prof. Georgi Lozanov, chairman of the Council for Electronic Media broke the surprising news.
It is expected that over 1.5 million Bulgarian households will be pouring five levs in the new fund each month.
It is still unclear how exactly the TV and radio taxes will be collected. Some say the new taxes should be collected by the municipalities, while others maintain that they should be added to one’s electricity bill.
"
Well, such a tax will not be levied on hospices and orphanages,” Lozanov explained.
The idea has been fiercely opposed by the Consumers’ Federation in Bulgaria.
