No-Frills FlyNiki, Cimber Sterling Take off to Bulgaria

Austrian low-cost carrier FlyNiki, owned by former Formula 1 world champion Niki Lauda, and Danish budget airline Cimber Sterling will launch regular flights to Sofia next year.

The Austrian carrier will service Sofia-Vienna flights once a day six times a week, with Saturdays being the sole exception. Prices of one-way tickets start from EUR 11 with no airport fees included.

The other low-cost company Danish Cimber Sterling used to carry out flights from Burgas to Copenhagen before it went bankrupt this year. The Danish regional carrier Cimber Air bought parts of Sterling and rebranded as Cimber Sterling.

Sofia airport representatives has said they expect the company to confirm its plans to start flight from Sofia to Copenhagen in the summer of 2010.

Hamburg International Airlines, which operates scheduled charter services, will be another new entry to Sofia airport schedules. It will operate Sofia-Berlin flights.

Wizz Air, EasyJet and Germanwings are the other low-fare airline companies conducting flights from Sofia airport. In 2009 they held a 26% market share after standing at no more than 10% a year earlier.

London-registered low-cost carrier Wizz Air, the first no-frills carrier to enter the Bulgarian market, will launch in the summer of 2010 flights to another four airports – Paris, Beauvais airport, Frankfurt, Hahn airport, Madrid and Bologna.

Low-cost carrier FlyNiki, owned by former Formula 1 world champion Niki Lauda, launched regular flights Vienna-Sofia-Vienna on 1 February 2010.

The carrier will service the flights once a day six times a week, with Saturdays being the sole exception.

During the working days, from Monday till Friday, the FlyNIki plane will depart from Sofia airport at 1.15 pm and will land in Vienna 1.45 pm local time.

On the same days the return flight from Vienna has been scheduled for 10 am local time.

On Sundays, the plane will depart from Sofia airport at 10,30 pm and arrive in Vienna at 11 pm. The return flight from Vienna has been scheduled for 7,20 pm local time, its arrival pencilled in at 9,50 pm local time.

Prices start from EUR 29, fees included.

From Vienna passengers may switch to other destinations – including Munich, Copenhagen, Frankfurt, Paris and Zürich - benefiting from the network of FlyNiki and its partner Air Berlin.

FlyNiki is an airline owned and run by Niki Lauda. After being ousted from Lauda Air by boardroom politics in November 2000, in late 2003 Niki Lauda bought some planes from a German airline that had gone bankrupt and started FlyNiki.

It operates as a budget airline mainly from Germany and Austria.

Snowy Sofia Welcomes Niki Lauda

Niki Lauda, owner of low-cost carrier FlyNiki and former Formula 1 world champion landed in Sofia aboard Airbus A 319 as his company made its virgin flight to the Bulgarian capital despite the snowy blizzard.

FlyNiki launched regular flights Vienna-Sofia-Vienna on 1 February 2010.
