Traffic Police will check vehicles for the use of safety belts by all passengers as part of a European Union-wide operation launched by European traffic police forces organisation TIPSOL.
The operation, which will continue until September 13 2009, will include checks on the use of seat belts and on childcare's safety measures while traveling.
The use of safety belts in Bulgaria is often cited as one of the reasons for the high number of road deaths, especially for back seat passengers.
In the past 10 years, mainly because of fines, motorists in Bulgaria started wearing seat belts when traveling in front seats. However, this is not the case with those at the back.
In 2008, out of 113 back seat passengers who died on Bulgarian roads, only three wore seat belts.
