In your case June because you were unfortunately given a counterfeit copy? when windows updates are downloaded it will send an update which specifically checks your windows license? the update they send is this one KB971033 so if you have already downloaded this update this maybe why you can't get any more updates as its been detected as being a copy? I don't advocate that anyone uses copies but in your case you are innocent and if it gets you out of a mess then don't allow this particular update to be installed. |

Windows Vista. Will probably leave as is. I get into trouble when I meddle. I thought updates were necessary. I have expensive Norton security which can also be a pain asking me to do a back up every 30 days.

If you have Vista then that's where you problems lie! Vista was released with problems which is why Windows 7 was released so quickly, Windows 7 is flawless and runs so well and so fast, as for updates you only need them because Microsoft say you do???? another thing that will slow your pc down is Norton which is resources hungry and wants to take control of your pc, you would be better off with something else like Avg which is a brilliant piece of software and you can get it fro free.

Thanks for that info. I bought my computer in 2008 in UK with Windows Vista installed which was probably why it was on offer! However, its okay for my use but I am not happy with Norton and its expensive. When it runs out I will install AVG which my daughter recommends. As for updates - I will just ignore. I thought things wouldn't work if I didn't update. Also, some give the impression they are free until you get to 'install' and then they can cost.

Not to be taken serious As we Silver Surfers know, sometimes we have trouble with our computers. I had a problem yesterday, so I called Eric, the 11 year old next door, whose bedroom looks like Mission Control and asked him to come over. Eric clicked a couple of buttons and solved the problem. As he was walking away, I called after him, 'So, what was wrong ? He replied, 'It was an ID ten T error.' I didn't want to appear stupid, but nonetheless enquired, 'An, ID ten T error ? What's that? In case I need to fix it again.' Eric grinned .... 'Haven't you ever heard of an ID ten T error before ? 'No,' I replied. 'Write it down,' he said, 'and I think you'll figure it out.' So I wrote down: [size=150:29ptj2jm]ID10T I used to like Eric, the little bas***d. if you're not a Senior yet then send this to one...

Go to control panel, select windows updates and turn off the automatic function. If anyone is considering a cleanup and wants to upgrade, may I suggest Windows 8..takes a day or two to get used to it, but it's worth it, believe me.
