Just a question that I'm sure has been asked before? I haven';
t yet bought a house but I'm wondering if having the outside of the house insulated is really worth bothering with? I'm sure some of you may have had it done so can you tell me what the benefits were if any? against the cost. Insulation 3023850720

Hi scott

Yes, in my opinion. If done properly, with the mesh, which some skimp on, then skimmed. It will tidy up the out side look of the property (you can correct any un-eaveness in the brickwork), it gives a water tight cover to brickwork, we also find it is less likely to crack than render - and of course the thicker one you use the better the insulation properties.

Our house is supposed to have very thick walls which in truth it has. But our first 2 winters always seemed to be cold indoors not freezing but could have been warmer. Last October we had Fibran put on the outside which was sealed with mesh and skimmed and painted. The paint was very expensive but is water proof so worth every penny. If you are going to do this then do not skimp on the cost. This winter has been very different with the temperature indoors being mildly tropical at times.

A good job, jobbed. g

we haven't had our house insulated because it is alittle too expensive for us at the momment and not a priority. But I bought lots of waterproof paint from B&
Q for external walls and took to over. it has made quite a lot of difference so not bad as a cheap alternative. Not sure how long it will last tho. g

Yes Scott I would have to agree insulate our place is freezing and there is the minimum insulation. We have seen this polystyrene sheets being put on the outside of all the town flats and then plastered over and painted seems to be the way it is done now.

Try and use Fibran. It is more expensive but far better than Polystyrene. g

I would agree with all that's been said here External wall insulation is a straightforward job and it’s an excellent way to save money on your heating bills. they use Expanded polystyrene (EPS)

Can you some idea of cost Tony - ideally for a 3 bedroom medium sized detached property.

Thanks Eric

The going rate a couple of years back for the insulation inclusive of install and finishing was around 40 levs a m2, you can use fibran but its a bit more expensive but I'm told its worth it, and much stronger .

The true cost is really unknown. We were quoted in the region of 7000 leva by a so called professional. But then found that a friends grandson could do it. We went to see his work and it was very good indeed. So had it done for a lot less. Send mikhev your house dimensions and he should be able to give you a fairly accurate estimate.
