Contraband with petrol will be consigned to the past from January 8 2011, Bulgarian Prime Minister Boiko Borissov vowed, cited by Bulgarian media on December 21 2010.

Starting from January 8, all cash registers in all petrol stations will be linked directly to the National Revenue Agency (NRA). According to authorities, the strategy is aimed to curtail illegal contraband, and funnel 250-300 million leva into the state Budget, mass circulation daily 24 Chassa reported.

Those 300 million leva were part of the country's grey economy, hence the stiff resistance, Borissov said.

On a different but equally contentious matter, Borissov said on December 23 that a document would be submitted to Cabinet requesting for diplomats with State Security past to be removed from office immediately.

The Dossier Commission launched operations in 2007, and has, since, exposed more than 2000 people who were one way or another employed at the country’s communist-era state security agency. Additionally, the commission revealed the names of about 200 diplomats who were agents or collaborators.

Half of Bulgaria’s most senior diplomats had been involved with State Security, according to the report, including serving ambassadors in London, Berlin, Madrid, Rome, Moscow, Beijing, Tokyo and the consuls-general in Chicago and St Petersburg.
