Hellish Car Crash Claims 5 Lives in Bulgaria

Five people have perished in a horrific car crash on the Hemus Highway near Bulgaria's Varna.

The accident happened Sunday afternoon after two cars driving in opposite directions made attempts to overtake those in front of them.

The road section in question has seen the highest number of car crashes causing death. This section has no crash barriers because it is supposed to serve as a reserve landing strip for the nearby Varna Airport.

The cars that crashed in a frontal collision had license plates from Varna and Veliko Tarnovo. Four of the total of six people in them died immediately;
one man died on the way to the hospital. The sixth person, a woman, is in a Varna hospital in critical condition.

The rescue units are working to establishment the identity of the casualties and have started cutting the smashed vehicles in order to remove the dead bodies trapped inside.

Don't quite understand how they manage to do this so often. I have been driving here for six years and never even found myself close to this situation. Don't you just wait until there is nothing at all coming in the opposite direction before overtaking?

Only ever seen one accident in Bg and that was 1 fatality with the body just lying on the side of the road with an old oily rag over the deceased head :shocked1:but it does beg the question why so many

bulgaria has a terrible record of accidents, most avoidable. overtaking on a blind bend so often seen here. i have seen many overtaking me, cannot possibly see what is in front, but dont care, not bothered, could not care less, this attitude of being immortal is short lived for many. seen so often by the many gravestones on the side of the road. there is more traffic now on bulgarian roads and the country roads are the main danger, but they cannot see the dangers of driving so carelessly until its too late. but all to often its the innocent ones who fall victim to this type of driving. bulgaria is developing and opening to modern cars with high performance but the person behind the wheel has little understanding of what can happen when drove with the mentality of im immortal, look at me. short lived as can be seen by this example of stupidity. when will they get a grip of safe driving here. how sad that lives are lost to people who think they are immortal.

passed this spot on the moterway about 7.30 last night...was still in a hell of a mess then ..........the way they are driving in Bg ..expecially in this stretch of this moterway is ridiculous...no regard for their own lives ..or more importantly ..other peoples......
its not even ..on this particular road ,anyway ..that there is heavy traffic...just a little patience is needed

Seems like accidents like this one will never sink in. The Bulgarian mentality is I must be in front. If I have understood the article right how on earth can two cars travelling in the opposite direction hit each other head on, on a motorway. I know there is no crash barrier but even so it must have been sheer stupidity.

Hellish Traffic Accident Kills Young Woman in Downtown Sofia



A young woman was killed in downtown Sofia Tuesday afternoon after being run over by a heavy duty construction truck.

The terrible accident happened at the major intersection between the "
Vitosha"
and "
Patriarch Evtimiy"
boulevards while the truck was maneuvering in an attempt to enter or exit the construction site for subway excavations, which is adjacent to the intersection.

The traffic pattern in the busy area was altered recently over the construction works, making the section for cars very narrow while "
Vitosha"
has been closed for trams. The location of the traffic lights and pedestrian crossings were also changed.

The young women, who died on the spot, was riding her bike near the construction site's fence.
