Sofia Municipality bans bathing in fountains
After problems including children using Facebook to organise "
water battles"
in Sofia's fountains, Bulgaria's capital city has slapped an official ban on bathing in fountains, bTV said.
Municipal officials got hot under the collar about children and teenagers, in ever-larger numbers, seeking to beat the July heat by jumping into fountains.
The "
water battles"
organised on Facebook led to children descending in large numbers, usually at the fountains in front of the National Palace of Culture (NDK) in the Sofia city centre or other areas in the centre.
Sofia municipality said that anyone breaking the ban on using fountains as swimming pools would face fines ranging from 100 to 5000 leva, to be issued by inspectors. Signs have been installed at all 13 fountains operated by the municipality, saying "
bathing is forbidden"
.
"
Regardless of how hot it gets, bathing is strictly prohibited. We will no longer accept the excuse 'but I had no idea it was forbidden' – well, now you know"
an inspector said.
