Germanwings Warns Bulgarian Passengers of Strike Actions

Pilots from Germany's no-frills carrier Germanwings, which operates a number of flights from and to Bulgaria, will join the strike of their colleagues from Lufthansa, the largest airline in Germany, raising the prospect of delays and cancellations for passengers.

The Cockpit Association, which represents about 4,500 pilots at Lufthansa and two of its subsidiaries, said that 94 percent of members had voted to strike. Work would cease from 12:01 a.m. Monday to midnight Thursday and affect flights by Lufthansa as well as the Lufthansa Cargo unit and Germanwings.

The low-cost company has assured that it has drawn up an alternative schedule for the flights, which will be updated 24/7 and can be checked at the site of the company [url=http:

Passengers, who have already booked a ticket during the strike period and want to change the timing, can fly on another Germanwings flight with no additional expenses charged.

The only requirement is that the ticket has been booked before midnight on February 16. Destinations of departing and arriving planes can not be changed.

Lufthansa Strike Threatens Havoc in Airline Traffic

The negotiations between the management of the German flag carrier Lufthansa and pilots who threaten to begin a strike Monday are continuing late Sunday.

Hours before the strike, Lufthansa had made a new offer to the pilot labor union “Cockpit” and it remains unclear if the strike will actually take place.

94% of the 4 500 “Cockpit” members have decided to go on strike until Thursday over demands for a 6,4% pay raise and halting the transfer of their jobs to Lufthansa affiliates abroad.

On Friday, Lufthansa announced that they will cancel two thirds of their flights for four days meaning the company will not serve 1 200 from a total of 1 800 daily flights.

The potential strike, however, will not affect connections to Bulgaria, according to the special flight schedule published on the company’s website. The 5 flights from Munich, Frankfurt and Düsseldorf and back are going to be serviced, but Lufthansa notes that last-minute cancellations are to be expected.

Lufthansa Pilots Begin 4-Day Strike over Job Security

About 4 000 pilots at German airline Lufthansa have gone on strike for four days in a dispute over job security.

The carrier has cancelled about 3 000 flights and has warned of delays both domestically and internationally, the BBC reported.

Lufthansa's offer of negotiations with the pilots was not taken up on Sunday before the strike began at midnight.

The pilots work at Lufthansa, Lufthansa Cargo and its low-budget subsidiary, Germanwings.

The airline normally offers about 1 800 flights daily - of which 160 are long-haul trips.

The potential strike, however, will not affect connections to Bulgaria, according to the special flight schedule published on the company’s website. The 5 flights from Munich, Frankfurt and Düsseldorf and back are going to be serviced, but Lufthansa notes that last-minute cancellations are to be expected.

Lufthansa Cancels Sofia-bound Flights over Strike

The German flag career Lufthansa canceled Monday two afternoon flights to Sofia, the Sofia airport informs.

The 1:05 pm flight from Munich and the 2:00 pm flight from Frankfurt have been annulled. The 4:50 pm flight to Munich and the 3:20 pm flight to Düsseldorf are still scheduled for regular departure.

The reason for the cancellations is the 4-day the strike of the German pilots, which began Monday, after negotiations between the Lufthansa management and the pilot labor union “Cockpit” stalled Sunday night.

According to earlier information, published on the company's website, the flights to and from Sofia were not supposed to be affected by the strike.

Lufthansa is asking all passengers to report to the airport no later than 60 minutes before departure and to call the Lufthansa representatives in Bulgaria ahead of time or call their travel agent for changes in their reservations.

Customers can call the 0049 800 8506070 hotline in Germany, or 02 937 3141 at Sofia airport and 02 930 4242 at the Sofia Lufthansa headquarters. The email is: [email:2mmseo3v]lufthansabg@dlh.

Lufthansa Pilots Suspend Walkout

Lufthansa and its pilots are set to return to the cockpit after the German airline and a key union agreed to halt a four-day strike that disrupted travelers and was poised to go on through Friday.

The four-day walkout ended less than 24 hours after it began after two hours in a Frankfurt labor court that saw both sides agree to suspend the strike and hold talks, they said Monday night.

Lufthansa confirmed the decision and said the walkout would end at midnight in Germany [4 p.m. Tuesday].

Lufthansa Cancels Sofia-bound Flights despite Strike End

Half of the Lufthansa flights will be canceled Tuesday despite the decision of the pilots of the German flag career to call off their planned 4-day strike.

The pilots ended the strike at 1 am Bulgarian time, but two flights to and from Sofia are still canceled for Tuesday and early Wednesday morning – the flight from Munich, landing at 12:20 pm and going back at 1:05 pm, and the flight from Frankfurt, landing in Sofia at 10:50 pm and departing at 6:00 am on February 24, are annulled.

The Sofia airport informs that beginning Wednesday all flights will depart according to the normal schedule.

On Monday about 4 500 German pilots went on strike after negotiations between the Lufthansa management and the pilot labor union “Cockpit” stalled Sunday night. The walkout was postponed until March 9 to give the opportunity for further negotiations. The agreement was made after a 2-hour hearing at the Labor Court in Frankfurt.

The Lufthansa spokesperson informs that several days will be still needed to resume normal schedule. The losses are estimated at EUR 25 M so far.
