Well all the children in the homes are well taken care of now, the government will not allow people to drop in any more nor will they accept any secondhand items, everthing has to be new. The new homes are all monitored and full reports done monthly by social services and visit from officials so the EU authorities are watchinig hence S/S are scared stiff of getting things wrong.
Now the homes for the elderly well, not sure anything is actually happening with them apart frome the small renovations and they are mainly to the directors office and home enterences. Again it just needs someone to make a fuss to get the attention needed. I do believe people are frightened to speak up in case they loose their jobs. You would not believe how many times I have been asked not to say anything and let them deal with it, I did that once but never again
Unfortunately Bill this is always the case, they are not at all concerned about their elderly or the Roma as most of the poor now are the Roma, which are still outcasts. The government will not show the real Bulgaria as it will embarrase them and that is what I had to do when we took on Glavinitiza project. They told me they have no money to do anything so I went direct to the governor and said if they cannot help than I would notifiy the British Media, low and behold within two days they somehow managed to find 20k lev in their budget and they started the renovations almost immediately. Amazing eh!
Now if an outsider like myself can have this much pull, why can't the Pastor's or Pope's do the same. I just don't understand, are they afraid to speak up, will they lose their jobs, are they really concerned about their people or is it just bull.
There is no reason what so ever why the Pastor cannot write to the EU commissions and put a plea case in and maybe ask them to visit the Roma villages with him and not the government. I suppose it is finding the right person to speak up, but what makes it worse is people and of course the elderly just will not say anything here. In our village when the Mayor visits it is only during voting time, if they have a problem they will ring him but nothing ever seems to get done and they flipping accept it. When voting time comes well, that is a different story. There are parties gallore as naturally they want the votes and will promise them all sorts and suprise, suprise nothing ever comes of the promises. Guess these people will never learn.
I have to sit back and bite my toung However, I do step out of my cacoon from time to time and raise a little havoc. The Mayor still smoked in the community hall until I told him he cannot do this as it is against the law and he is the one setting an example to others. He was not pleased with me but from that day on he has never smoked in our hall nor has anyone else as I put up 'no smoking signs'. We went to the other part of our village as it is split in two with one Mayor. The mayor told me there is no smoking in this hall either. So as you see it only takes one person to just has to speak out.
Another occasion was our annual festival, the bbq man comes sells his bbq, drinks and makes a good profit but does not give anything to the commuity hall - What made it worse was he has two electric BBQ's he quite happily plugged into the community hall electricty. This had been going on for every event then I asked does he pay the hall a commission for all the business they bring him and dose he pay toward the electric bill, silly me what was I thinking so I just had to say something to him and now everything time he comes he pays they 20lev towards the electricty and all it took was an explaination an of course why should he pay anything if he can get away with it.
