| Hi all, I am sorting my stuff to make my mincemeat for the festive season and have one item missing. Does anyone know if you can get glace cherries anywhere? I know they are not traditional (hate using traditional recipes anyway) but I find they lighten the mincemeat a bit.
Also my favourite cake of all time is cherry and almond. The almonds I can manage, but I do need my cherries to make my own birthday cake!
Your's hopefully..... |

| I think I remember seeing them in Metro (VT)? Mind you, that was about 5 years ago, so things have probably changed [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] However, if you can get a hold of any maraschino cherries, you could always make your own and store ready for winter baking. |

| Oh dear, I will have to have a better look. I found all sorts of fruit and nuts but not them. And yes, I do like the bottled cherries, but they don't have that satisfying pop that a whole glace cherry has, and of course they are totally tasteless and far too sweet......but right for the job! Maybe I should spend more time with cake decorations. |

| At Christmas time I see them (and sometimes buy them) in VT bazaar together with most glace fruits. Sometimes the bazaar supermarket has them in the dried fruit and nut area. Its surprising that they aren't more freely available when cherries are prolific around here. We have sweet cherry trees and sour cherry trees in our garden but no idea how to preserve them for cakes. Too late now to learn. Don't forget that most glace fruits sold loose are in 100grm quantities and quite pricey. Bulgarians don't really make our fruit cakes and my Bulgarian ladies liked my Christmas cake but thought it too rich for their tastes. I cheated and bought a lot of dried fruit when on a visit to UK. |
