Strong winds and heavy rains have veered an Air Via airplane out of the runway of the airport in Bulgaria’s Black Sea city of Varna, injuring two passengers, authorities said.

According to initial information the poor weather forced the pilot of the plane to land too near to the far end of the track and he just needed more space to stop.

Two elderly women - a Bulgarian and a German - have been slightly injured as a plane unexpectedly left the runway of the airport in Bulgaria’s Black Sea city of Varna.

The casualties have been identified, they are aged 71 and 81 respectively. They have broken limbs and are currently treated in a local hospital.

The accident took place at 10:19 am EET on Friday.

The Air Via airplane was carrying out a charter flight from Leipzig with a total of 172 passengers aboard.

All passengers have been evacuated from the aircraft.

Until the early afternoon on Friday Varna airport remained closed with all incoming and outgoing flights redirected to the airport in Burgas.

Varna must have got the wind a day after us. Thursday was a night mare it was a like a gibly in Africa and went on all day. Broke down the roses and plants but no other damage sadly those people on the plane didn't get off so light. Hope they are all well and calm now.

Varna actually had a mini hurricane go threw and the rain came down literaly in sheets
