PostSubject: Guard dog incident   Guard dog incident Icon_minitimeFri Jan 11, 2013 2:52 pm

Recently our neighbour's guard dog got loose and for some reason decided to enter our land. My Xera went into protective mode and tried to chase her out. The guard dog is a big karakachan mix and not socialised. I heard this terrible screaming coming from the garden and rushed out to see the most terrifying sight of the two of them locked in battle with my smaller Dalmation getting the worst of it with her hind leg in the Karakachan's mouth. I screamed and screamed and the guard dog ran away. I screamed again for the owner who didn't seem to be around. I should think half the village heard me.
Poor Xera was bravely limping to the gate determined to see her off and my Hero was there by this time. He said she was alright but I knew the injuries were quite serious. Her tail was bloody as was her back leg and her mouth. I called the vet (Eclipse in VT) and they came immediately. She was badly hurt and needed a painkilling injection before they could do anything. She had several bad bite wounds but thankfully no broken leg which she couldn't put to the ground. They wouldn't stitch the open wounds because that would seal in any infection, but kept bathing them with antiseptic. Thankfully they said she would be okay but gave her several injections and pills to stop the pain and antibiotics for the next 10 days.
She is now an indoor dog and recovering well and I can't praise the vets too much. There were two of them, a man and lady who come annually to administer her rabies jabs. They came so quickly and reassured me that all would be well because Xera is a lovely dog with lovely owners!!!! I was told to telephone her progress every day and to phone if anything seemed amiss.
The cost was a very reasonable 75levs which included their transport and pills. However, the neighbour who owns the guard dog has said he will pay the bill for us. I guess he doesn't want us reporting the incident to the Mayor who would immediately shoot a dangerous dog out of control. Apparently she had got off her chain and the owner's son was not being diligent enough!
Oh well, all's well that ends well and I can't blame a dog which is trained to guard the owner's animals. We Brits may not always understand the Bulgarians attitude to animals but in their way they often do.
On TV news this morning Bulgarians were helping a deer and a fox off a frozen lake rather than killing them. Bravo! g

How awful for you and Xera. I hate hearing dogs fighting, sends a chill down my spine.

Sounds as if your screaming saved the day. I hope Xera recovers well. And thank goodness you have good vets.

Sounds horrendous, must have been very traumatic for you. I hope your poor dog recovers soon and it doesnt have any lasting effect.
Well done to the vets too for a first class service. Frightening to think what might have happened had you not got there in time. Fair play to the owner for offering to pay the bill and hope he learns a lesson from this and it never happens again. !

:Hearts:Bgbazz. Mmmm its certainly been an eventful start to the new year. Hope it calms down a bit now and no more chicken deaths or dog fights. Its actually better than last year when my Hero was hospitalized for 10 days. Its a wonder my blood pressure doesn't rocket but my doctor has prescribed the right pills so I have to be grateful to him too. s

Thanks Beautifulangel. She has made a spectacular recovery and has now discovered the sofa! However, we let her out again and she seems to be concerned about sniffing where the fight occurred on the path and looking towards the gate. Maybe she is wondering if it will happen again so the sooner she goes out on a walk and gets her confidence back the better and things will be back to normal. She is not a timid dog and very brave and strong so I don't think there will be any longterm problems. Fingers crossed it hasn't effected her meetups with other dogs on walks which she normally loves.

I know this isn't very nice at all but it does go on quite a lot and even actual arranged dog fights still continue here in Bg, I'm glad your best friend is fine and everything is sorted for you. Guard dog incident 2581928987

Hi Oldun, just wondering how Xera is getting on. Has she got over her spat with the other dog and enjoying her walks again?

How lovely of you to ask. Yes, Xera is amazing. She is fully recovered in spite of refusing the last of her antibiotic tablets. Tried everything but her sense of smell told her what I was up to hiding them in her food. Try getting a pill into a dog's mouth. Anyway, she is fine and bouncing around back in the snow and happy in her own house again. This is the second time this guard dog has badly injured her and it still hasn't changed her personality and she still loves the vet to pieces and wags her tail when she sees them. I think she knows we all love her and want to get her better. She also hasn't changed on her walks and will try to get any dog around to play with her. Unfortunately these dogs don't understand playing and usually run off wondering what this spotty animal is up to!

I would urge anyone to report these to the authorities. If I expressed the repulsion I feel for the scum who get involved in such 'sport', it would be deleted from here, and my membership withdrawn.
