Hi Guys
I heard last night that there is an adult disability home just outside of Silistra that house 127 residents from 18 years to old age. We have been meaning to contact them for some time now, to see if we can help, but just not had the time. However, last night I had a message to tell me of there existence and unfortunately there was serious accident there yesterday morning which resulted in an elderly person dying from an electric shock and his room mate admitted to hospital burns. This is link [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] ... ew&
id=5557 the report and below is the Google Translation of the report. It is shocking to think that this is happening, when a regular safety check and a some fire smoke detectors would have easily prevented this tragedy. I will see if I can get the ball rolling here by obtaining smoke alarms and I would hope that the electrical system is being looked at now by the fire chief. I met the Fire Chief a few years ago so will also contact him and see if there is any way we can help them prevent another death. Now I have made contact with the director we will be adding this Disability Home to our list to help for next year. I am awaiting the information about the home and the residents and what their needs are.

84-year-old man was killed this morning in a fire at home for adults with disabilities in Silistra village of Aydemir. The dead man was charred. According to the version of the specialists of the Regional Management "
Fire Safety and Protection of Population"
, the old man died of shock. In an attempt to get out of bed has caught the contact snatched it and caused a short circuit. According to the director of the home Atanaska Nenova the room did not have heaters. The fire was injured and 78-year-old man who was in the same room. He was admitted to hospital due to gassing in Silistra. Currently there is no danger to his life, but doctors feared complications occur.
The fire occurred on the fourth floor of the building at around 7 am this morning. 127 residents of the home were evacuated promptly and no other injuries.
This is the second man who died in a fire at the beginning of the year in Silistra. Six people injured, shows report from the district administration, "
Fire Safety and Protection of Population"
in Silistra.

HEALTH AND SAFETY, what is that they might ask
Would a smoke alarm have made any difference to the poor man, it sounds to me as if he was electrocuted and the shock killed him

Yes sound like that to me too Willow and not sure a smoke alarm would have been any help to that poor man (God rest his soul) but at least it would alert the others - It's a small step for us to take in the right direction. I have no idea what this place is like but going by the Home for the Elderly and the Other disability centre I would not expect too much. Items of furniture going back 60 years no doubt. . Thanks Andy appreciate that. You will find a full list of the orphanages and organizations that we have help so far and Aydemir will be added to this list once we have all the facts. We are growing bigger and bigger each year. g

Morning Guys

Well I have received the following info below

Dear Bernie,

I’d like to thank you again for showing so much interest and sympathy for our Home. My colleague, Mr. Stoichev, told me about the many acts of kindness you and your friends had done for the Children’s Homes. I hope that we are laying the foundations of a good friendship which will bring a lot of joy and satisfaction.

I’d like to offer the following information to your attention.

A Residential Home for Elderly People with Physical Disadvantages

Director: Mrs. Atanaska Nedeva Nenova

It was opened in 1984 and provides 24-hour residential care by professionals. It is situated 7 km westwards from the town of Silistra, in the Delenkite quarter. It provides social services outside the family environment. In 2005 we started working on various projects. Owing to these projects we carried out repairs, which finished at the end of 2009. The necessary equipment of the Home is in a very good condition. The Home has 115 rooms, 68 of which are for the residents. There are 6 sitting-rooms. There is a call system which the residents use if they need to call the medical staff. Free access to information and communication is available.

The staff is of 54 who take care of 130 residents (61 women and 69 men) but the number of the consumers varies monthly. The average age of the residents is 70. 80 percent of them are bed-ridden.

Some of the residents don’t have any relatives. Others have got ones but their relatives cannot take care of them. Very few residents have got a family and they take a leave from the Home to visit their families for a few days a year.

We give our support to the residents for taking part in various educational programmes depending on the resident’s age and personal choice. We organize the following initiatives: free access to the library, literary readings, delivering lectures on public health, excursions and trips, going to the cinema or to the theatre, visiting museums and galleries. We get them to know the rights of the differently disabled and have talks about the problems of the retirees. The residents are regularly acquainted with the alterations in the system of the national retirement security. We explain to them the procedure for asking compensations for social integration of the physically disabled and for examination from the Medical Board who give certificate for the physical disability of the person. The residents receive our support for the supply with the prescribed medicines, for physical therapy and rehabilitation- remedial gym, individual gym and getting medical and stomatological care. They are supplied with healthy and nutritional food and the special dietary requirements are observed-diet №9- for residents suffering from diabetes and diet №15- a balanced diet. We also take into account the residents` personal tastes.

Annually the residents visit similar residential homes in different parts of Bulgaria which turns to be a good and useful practice for socializing and bringing positive emotions.

On the whole, the Residential Home for Elderly People with Physical Disadvantages is well-equipped and the building is in a good condition but it needs a fire-precaution system with a sound signal. There are fire-precaution buttons in the corridors, but there aren’t any in the rooms which is a serious problem because almost all of the residents are bed-ridden or move with great difficulty.

Also, when we want to celebrate holidays-Easter, Christmas, birthdays, etc., we meet difficulties to create the atmosphere and to decorate because of our low budget.

That is all for now! Give our best regards to your family and friends.

We are looking forward to your visit!

Happy Christmas! We wish you much health, happiness and success!

           Best wishes: Atanaska Nenova

Well I am truly delighted with this report and feel the best way we can help them is to supply them with 120 smoke alarm detectors and also for Christmas do 140 shoeboxes or just do 6 large boxes of new items and they can be distributed according to the specific needs. They are all elderly people there so should not be too much hassle getting the normal gloves, hats, scarves, socks, underwear, toiletries, etc.

I am going to contact our fire stations here and see if they can help with detectors, so wish me luck. c

Well after talking with the Director of the Silistra orphanage it appear they do no have any smoke detectors either - shock horror for us now - I posting on our facebook and Graham Moffat came forward and donated 8 he brought with him from England - he posted them last Monday and by Wed they were installed in the orphanage so at least they have some protection now. I have contacted all the fire stations here to see if they can help out with surplus stock but as yet not had a reply - Perhaps I have overstretched myself this time as we do need around 150 smoke detectors and I assume the disability centre and the home for the elderly don't ha Aydemir Adult Disability Home 3998065313 ve them either I found two in our cupboards we will never get round to using so put a plea out on facebook so will see what happens fingers cross. We were donated 8 smoke detectors from Graham Moffat in BG he sent them to the Dimcho on he Monday and there were up on the wall by Wed. So delighted with that 8 is better than none at all.

We have also been donated 40 for private sources. 25 will go to Aydimere Adult Disability Home, 10 to Malek orphanges and 10 to the Dimcho any more we receive will go to the Home for the Elderly The baby orphanage appears to have updated systems as this was the residents of the president at one stage. It even has an indoor swimming pool in, althought they cannot afford the upkeep of a swimming pool they use it as a play area, much more ptratical.

We have also got them a christmas tree and decorations. We also filled a box and current filling another with useful items like hats, scarves, gloves, socks, nighties PJ toiletries and gift sets - wrapping paper, sellotape, pens and notpads so the staff can wrap up a preent for the 130 sresidents there as there will be enough items in boxes for everyone.

This will be our first contact with them - we will see how things go and if all goes well and the itmes get to the right people, than we will add them to our list next year.
