For most Bulgarians, beating the summer heat means resorting to ice-cream and mastika - a drink similar to ouzo - but police are now in hot pursuit of a gang who stole 207 ice-creams and 18 bottles of mastika from a shop in Veliki Preslav.
The theft took place on August 24 2011, as temperatures soared, leading to "
Code Yellow"
risky weather warnings in several districts.
However, the thieves were caught on closed-circuit television cameras and arrests were expected, according to a report by bTV.
The report said that cash compensation would be sought from the thieves, "
because it will obviously be difficult to get the ice-cream and mastika back"
.
On August 25, high temperatures were forecast across Bulgaria, from 34 degrees Celsius in Sofia to 35 degrees in Plovdiv, higher in south-western Bulgaria, with 38 degrees forecast for Sandanski.
